I am off to France in June, I have read the rules about speed cameras on Sat Navs do I need to deactivate them or delete them completely? can anyone advise? :?

From the AA website;

"What should you do
If you have a satnav capable of displaying French camera locations in France then you must at least disable camera alerts before driving in France. We recommend that you contact the manufacturer of the satnav for advice as it is likely that a software or database update is available that will actually remove camera data for France from the device.

If you have a satnav system built into your car then we recommend contacting the vehicle manufacturer in the first instance."

Hi Mike

I can actually remove the cameras myself if need be, but was just curious if the French police will accept deactivated alerts or a complete deletion so they cannot be activated.

Dave

From the wording on the above site, my interpretation is that as long as they are deactivated, then that's acceptable. Pound to a penny the French plod check them on every UK car they stop...

I wouldn't worry about it. Never heard of anyone having any grief. If they fine you just ignore it. If they serve you papers on French ignore them. You have to be able to understand your charges and the French fail miserably at complying with this part of eu law.

i don't think that you will have problems with that :D
every body here use coyote or waze
at least the menu in english will lose 99% of the french policemen
don't forget that in june we are decreasing speed from 90 to 80 km/h
and we will have plenty of 'standard car' with onboard speed camera
the nightmare begins

80kph, wheres the fun in that!!!!! :tumbleweed:

We travelled across Europe using the bmw sat nav no problems
Didn't deactivate the speed cams never been pulled in the 10 or so years we've travelled throughout Europe
All we did is take the dash cam out while in austria as it's a huge No No .

I wouldn’t worry about getting caught by a speed camera in France. The French authorities (or any other country for that matter) cannot enforce penalities on UK drivers for the act of speeding. You may be fined, but usually this wouldn’t be from getting caught via a camera, but being caught red handed by the gendarmerie.

However, last February I drove past a police car doing 120 on the A1 going to Paris and they didn’t pull me. (Probably because they couldn’t be bothered to fill out the paperwork after they saw my GB plates).

Also just popped across the boarder and no issues. I've even spotted a few cars without GB stickers or letters beside the number plate. Don't think it's all that necessary... IMO it's just hype. Sure disable it but don't worry about it after that.

Finally if you're going in the Zed just pop the screen down so it lies flat (in the rare eventuality you're actually stopped). From what I've heard Zeds are rare over there and they won't realise it's got a sat nav!

Well said

I have driven for over 30 years back and forth from the UK to NL, never had a UK identifier (as I am not from the UK  ) and never disabled any detector I had.

I was only stopped in Spain once, but as even young Spanish police don't speak anything else but Spanish, the stop was about 1 minute as I had no idea what they said, and vice versa.

I disagree I got a fine from Germany and I have heard they will come after you for it using whatever means necessary so as it was only 20 euro i paid it

Again, I beg to disagree. I found Germany even more lax when it came to speeding. From my experiences in the Rhineland, many German motorists ignored the speed limit of the road and instead drove at the speed that they were comfortable with (bit like the M40 where most people drive between 80 and 100).

Yes the drivers are lax but if you get caught by a speed camera they will send you the fine and they will follow it up if you don't pay it

No. They cannot enforce the fine unless you are caught red handed on the spot.

The EU has put a system in place to share driver details across borders, for some safety-related driving offences:

It only applies where the offender isn't penalised while still in the country
It only applies to specific, road safety-related offences:
Speeding
Drink/drug driving
Seatbelt/crash helmet
Red light/forbidden lane, and
Mobile phone offences
The UK joined the system for new offences committed after 6 May 2017

And more and more people are reporting getting foreign letters for UK registered cars as well. So far I have been clear, but t sure is a challenge to get through Europe without getting flashes. The last flash was in Germany in a 50 zone and I was doing 51 on my digital counter. Could not believe it that it flashe me, never heard from it though.

Fairs Ronk, the law has clearly changed since I last crossed the border.
