Same holiday – different Zed (Epilogue)

With the shape and looks of the Zed there's great satisfaction to be had simply cleaning the thing don't you think?

It might be easier to have the mind set that the Zed looks good filthy - mine's certainly been that way and when really mucky there's some satisfaction in seeing it well used and enjoyed, even in foul weather conditions - not just fair weather ownership and use - nice one.

Day 3

Helmsley to Stokesley (B1257)

Paul gave me the heads up on this route – cheers mate. Checking the forecast it looked like the next 3 days were going to be overcast with a 10% chance of rain. So we decided to drive the route today, hoping to make it top-down all the way.

Helmsley: the start of the proper drive. The weather was menacing, hopefully the strong winds would keep the rain clouds away.

Helmsley2_zpssuclcbu0.jpg

Driving out of Helmsley we were soon on decent driving roads that just got better and better - it took all my willpower to stop for pics.

HtoS5_zpsv6qooken.jpg

A clear road all the way, and so inviting it was difficult keeping to the speed limit.

HtoS2_zpsdbpldpoe.jpg

Heading over the tops a lorry on the opposite side gave me a quick flash. I waved back and slowed down a little, and sure enough a couple miles further on we passed a mobile speed camera (round a bend and on the crest of a hill).

There were one or two villages to negotiate at 30 and 40 but the rest of the drive had a 60 limit. Great twists and turns, and dips and rises, I kept the revs high between 3k and 4k – great fun. Thanks again to Paul for this one.

Before we knew it we were in Stokesley. We drove to the outskirts and parked up for free (avoiding pay & display always feels like a mini triumph)

Lady Marlon walking into Stokesley.

We had lunch in a cool café called Olivia’s, then spent few hours mooching around the charity shops.

Decided to drive back via Thirsk. Parked up next to the enemy.

Leaving at 5 it was dark and wet - we had to drive with the roof up for the first time that day.
Had dinner at the Stone Trough Inn, Kirkham Abbey – nice roaring fire and good food.

fire_zpshxmgsyyb.jpg

Left the Inn at about 10ish and decided it had to be top-down the rest of the way. Weather was incredibly mild - outside temp showing as 16.5

A night shot on the way back to the cabin.

Thought you'd enjoy the route Marlon - I have the self same photos in that layby :o

(Good to hear about the warning of the speed van  )

The drive over to Whitby (A169)

The journey over the North York Moors National Park is a drive I always look forward to. The A169 has lots of twists and turns together with plenty of overtaking opportunities.

A169-sign_zpsdyx6zux5.jpg

This was another roof down day, not as windy as yesterday with some blue sky and the sun appearing now and again.
The road cuts a lonely path through miles of spectacular open moorland, and for the most part the surface is smooth.

A169-1_zpsxbf58i5c.jpg

Punching through the gears and keeping the revs high the car covered the miles effortlessly. However, two sets of road works with temporary traffic lights spoil the flow a little.

A169Roadworks_zpsgdvaqwor.jpg

Everything about this car feels right: Approaching a bend and dabbing the brakes, dropping the clutch and down a gear as the revs jump, both hands on the wheel turning into the corner the car feels planted through the curve.

A169fromCar_zpsclqosajy.jpg

Then accelerating smoothly out of the bend, revs climbing - the power of the straight-six effortlessly propelling the car onwards, always with plenty of torque in reserve.

A169-2_zpsuyqpoq4l.jpg

A long straight section now, up though the gears to fifth, hands at 10 to 2 - scenery flashing by - eyes on the long straight ahead. Closing the distance on an Audi and having to slow - dropping down to 4th. Moving up behind him I ease out slightly – the road ahead is clear - dropping to 3rd the revs jump and I plant my right foot - we’re past in a flash, the sound of the engine rising as all 265 horses are unleashed in an ear splitting roar. Punching through the gears again, a quick glance in the rear mirror and the Audi’s a dot in the distance. Back up to 5th and eager for the next bend - big grin on my face.

Having almost reached Whitby we decide to make a slight detour and head off to Robin Hood’s bay for lunch at the Victoria Hotel.

Headed back at 5pm, so hit peak hour traffic – not great planning, but still had an enjoyable drive back.
Parked up at the Cabin.

Very nice Colin.

Did the trip to Whitby last year (not in the Zed). Brought back some great memories as I used to go to Robin Hoods Bay when I was a nipper.

Might have to have a drive over in the Zed next spring.

A pic of the car after the ritual morning wash. In my defence its 1 bucket and a quick once over with a sponge concentrating mainly on the arches and sills, takes about 5 minutes.

I’m not cleaning the alloys. There - I’ve said it. I’m leaving them dirty (deep breath in - hold, and breathe out). Actually I think they look quite good - like they’ve had a light graphite refurb?

It’s overcast and threatening rain so we decided to go to Harrogate for a potter. After a rather slow and boring journey down the A59 and a prolonged search for somewhere to park, we ended up outside Betty’s Tea Room. Never visited Bettys before because we refuse to queue to get in, but there’s no queue today so we thought what the hell. The missus ordered a small cake called a winterberry something or other, and we both ordered a cup of tea. My tea was £3.65 and her peppermint tea was £3.75. So that’s £7.40 for hot water and tealeaves – Fu*k me! Including the cake it came to £10.90 - ouch.

Apparently the cake was amazing though, and it was silver service, and the waitresses were very smart in their white shirts and black waistcoats and skirts, and there was a Maitre d’ to greet us and show us to our table. I guess all that pomp and ceremony costs.

When I’m out and about I rarely feel like the youngest in the crowd, but looking around this place the clientele all had at least 10 years on me. Sorry no pics from Bettys, it felt rude to even take my mobile out of my pocket, let alone start snapping pics. I already felt slightly ill at ease in my jeans and sweater – many of the gentlemen were suited and booted, and the ladies were immaculately turned out in their Sunday best. My unease was further compounded by the fact that Lady M stubbornly refused to remove her baseball cap.

Much to Lady M’s disgust I’d only put 30 minutes on the parking ticket, so by the time we were seated and served I had to go and move the car. Leaving her to her tea and cake, I drove around until I’d found a free parking space. Walking the 15 minutes back I have to admit to getting slightly lost, and had to ask directions. I eventually found my way back to Bettys but the missus had moved on. Marvellous.

Apparently the charity shops in Harrogate weren’t up to scratch so we headed off to York to salvage what was left of the day. Leaving Harrogate we immediately hit road works and inched along for 15 minutes. 45 minutes later we were crawling into York – the traffic was an absolute nightmare; by the time we were parked up it was just after 4pm. I managed to find a coffee shop with good WiFi and posted up yesterdays pics while the missus checked out the charity shops.

All in all it was a frustrating day – the driving was dire, insofar as we spent most of the day in slow moving or stationary traffic, or trying to park. Hopefully tomorrow will make up for it – forecast is good, we’re planning to start off in Malton and then heading over to Scarborough.

BTW it turns out Lady M had no such sensitivities regarding snapping pics in Bettys, so here’s one showing the cake counter

Harrogate,Knaresborough & York are great places to visit & have been a regular in the past but not for me any more :o
You've highlighted the very reason i won't return , as nice as they are it's not worth the hassle & stress of getting there, getting parked & getting away  Chester is another one to avoid which is a shame

Cakes look good though :)

Malton & Scarborough

I was up and out by 9am (after washing the car). There’s an American diner 10 mins away – you know the sort of thing: all you can eat challenges and the ‘Wall of Shame’ nonsense. But they do make great pancakes and the coffee is good. During the holiday I indulge in at least 2 breakfasts there – sets me up for the day.

Huckleberrys3_zpsibxu9s5w.jpg

Went for my usual: Pancakes, American streaky bacon, syrup, and all the coffee you can drink.

Huckleberrys1_zpsvyv2e9bm.jpg

I wimped out and couldn’t finish all the pancakes - and it was a short stack. Probably deserved my very own ‘Wall of Shame’.

The diner had WiFi so spent some time catching up with life on the forum. Then left the diner and drove the long way back to the cabin. With the weather reports dominated by the imminent storms, we set off to Scarborough with a quick stop at Malton first.

Saw this beaut in the car park – perhaps Brad’s moved on to the 3 series?

The best of the weather was in the morning. It was a little cooler with the roof down on the way to Scarborough and by the time we arrived the wind was coming in gusts and the sky had turned grey.

Not wanting to repeat the parking fiasco of yesterday, I drove into the first NCP we came across.

carNCP_zpsas3j84hv.jpg

I went for a wander along the coast while Lady M went off to scour the charity shops.

ScarCoast_zpsqtohcn0y.jpg

I caught up with her later in Oxfam and found this 2016 Supercar calendar. The ///M boys will be happy.

SuperCars_zps2jffg5db.jpg

Set off back to the cabin at around 6. It was cold and blustery so the roof stayed up. Back at the cabin the rain had set in and the wind was picking up so we decided to batten down the hatches and not venture out for tea as planned. Lady Marlon cooked some pasta and we debated whether or not to risk the outdoor hot tub.

Final day

After a full cooked breakfast at the American Diner (they actually had a veggie option for the missus) we set off for Northallerton with the roof down, but pulled over after 10 mins as it was too bloody cold. The wind was stiff and the temperature had dropped to 8 degrees C. With the roof up we soon warmed up and enjoyed the scenic route via Malton and bypassing Thirsk - Great driving roads. These pics taken on the move by the missus on her iPhone:

After a great hours drive we arrived and parked up. The traffic spray and muddy roads had left their mark

Pottered around NorthAllerton for a few hours, had a drink and cake in Costa, then headed back.
Stopped off at the Stone Trough Inn at Kirkham Abbey

Then returned to the cabin for the last time.

Next morning we packed up and set off home.

I didn’t wash the car

Enjoyed that - feel like I've been away myself

Betty's tea room - it's something that has to be done! The old Spa at Harrogate has a lovely impressive Chinese restaurant in it's wonderful Victorian rooms (amazing loos!) - recommended.

Did you get to Oliver's Mount? You can drive around the track where motorcycles do amazing speeds between the trees kerbs and hills. The road up to and behind the Castle is worth a drive as well - tight but an old part of Scarborough. North Bay is worth a drive along and visit Peasholme Park or the Outdoor theatre.

Love the photo at night along the hedges
