Salmon Relay Change

Yeah definitely must do. The salmon relays eventually basically rust shut meaning the roof motor runs constantly and you can't open the boot and your battery drains until its dead. So... replace them relays!

It’s not rust that’s the problem, the large current draw burns the contacts of the relays & they can end up arc welded together.
Rob

Same thing...

The end result's the same, different means of getting there

SmartBear is being generous…actually it does matter…

With rust associated failure (if it ever happened) the circuit would fail open..ie the roof fails to operate..

However with arcing the danger is the contacts weld together making the pump run to oblivion ..

Ergo it does matter..

Everyone loves a pedant. :poke:

Happy New Year to you too

Interesting that you’re suddenly so concerned about facts when you got caught trying to flog an overpriced Z4 lying about its condition and not disclosing its major mechanical problems…

Oohhhh…meoww…goodwill to all men

Stuart, you don’t actually need to unscrew anything, there’s a quick release lever. If you push that the whole housing with the relays in it slides out, switch the relays over then slide back in place until it locks home

Hi Andy. Went out and swapped in the new ones earlier today - thanks for your tip. A wee push out of the plastic lever and then lift the housing out after pushing back the bracket wee bit to get enough room.

Glad it was nice and easy Stuart and now some peace of mind knowing they’re done

...but later found there is a component across the coil.
Can someone look at an old relay, is it a diode or resistor?
Did anybody answer this question before?
Well, there is a resistor in parallel to the coil.

The CTM sends a short current pulse to all the relays and solenoids before starting a roof operation. With these resistors, it can check the availability of these components as well as the wires to it. Same with most of the different sensors.

On the following charts, these pulses can be seen for the 3 solenoids of the hydraulic pump on chart 3...5, later on chart 1+2 for both relays.

Robbi..not sure if you have seen the UK TV program 'Master Mind' https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mk1s

You should do the 20 questions on ' The life and times of the E89 Roof System'

But would be an option if you could organize a meeting with all my minions this year.

Would be great to watch though:

newbie question on these relays - are they main dealer only or are the ebay ones just as good/reliable?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175192844466?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item28ca4ea8b2:g:YjEAAOSwoBFeOBq5&amdata=enc%3AAQAGAAAA4ITjzOsBam939tJdhritisVf3bUktOrMRnN%2FXxXr7tbH412t%2FtOwvuP9INkVZMhrZZyo%2BJFchKLTGEkdQXM%2FPzlT9L7VGhFi1zgJyANcLYzaoadiarQ7%2FHLL3b7frrxUN8C1J1XC1z1gHhzwKvpsXRUrt%2BLlFkk%2FlfNrZMVnQ2Us%2FA6QkM%2BSVa81%2FlAVjorihVrEeAQcmGFcyAKkb1RwDLClyXrTippMxKZGLkYqpqf0cpLW81ohWqFkR2zVbp%2FIkzd3Uw0US0eJtOmiyDyDjD0Cv6ZIlD4%2FMsQzVp%2ByjmcU%7Ctkp%3ABFBM_sPL5JJg

The part number of that is 12631742690

The part number of the current version of a roof relay is 12631742690

So yes it’s ok it would appear..

You have to be aware of fakes and clones on eBay and Amazon ..at 93% score it’s not compelling to moi..

Personally I’d buy them from a BMW dealer ….it’s one of those parts you really really don’t want to f**k up…

Very silly question maybe, but whereabouts exactly are these relays located please guys??
Not silly at all. We've all been new to this at some stage. In the boot in that secret area with the battery. Rear of car side of battery and above what looks like a cylinder resting on its side. You have to undo a screw to get at the relays(2). I changed mine a few weeks ago, and seriously, it is so very easy to do.
