As for specialists...you've got Autotech, Telford, Moseley Motorsport, Telford or NCB Autokraft in Earlswood, Solihull (sorry no website link).

NCB I have used in the past. Didn't complete the work I asked for and when I suspected head gasket a while ago, asked for a quote and he didn't get back to me. Also stated they had never done one. That's one specialist/fitter out the running

For both the M and other BMW's I have used a number of specialist in Brum.

I am very local to NCB and do not use anymore for similar reasons to yourself, I used and recommended him to a couple of friends and family based on reputation and location but the standards significantly slipped as he employed more and more less experienced spanner monkeys.

I tried Jo Darby in Redditch and was also left cold, OK for general BMW stuff but would not use for the M again.

Moved a little further afield to Autobahn Servicing in Halesowen and felt much more like it; in the know on the S54, good facilities and some heavy metal been looked after. Good feedback on M3Cutters, felt like they understood people who like cars rather than just see cash generators.

Thank you for the advice

After all you've been through with the car, sorry to hear this. Hope it all gets sorted okay and your wallet doesn't take to much of a hit.

Thanx mate. Whatever it is I'm ready for it. It's just finding the right man to tackle the issue. So many dickheads out there that can talk a good S54 but haven't a clue really.

On the upside, my old lady thinks I've done well to last this long in it

Urgh - does sound like cams/followers. Hopefully you'll get away with new followers only. If the cams are beyond repair or re-profiling, then at least you have the option of high-lift replacements to turn this story around. :)

Its a hefty kick in the spuds Dan especially after all the effort taken to get this far .
Feel free to share a little more on yesterdays manouvres which resulted in this outcome .
There does appear to be a link with S54 engine meltdown & extreme heat cycle / dirty oil / low oil / cold start thrashing or general oil starvation from hitting the bends hard on trackdays

Lol. Oil was 3k old and checked everytime I drive the car. It was castrol edge professional 10w60.

Here's the events leading upto destruction:

Starts the car and waited for the rev counter count down.
Drove out my village, Headed to get fuel 3.5miles away. (never run below a quarter of a tank and has to be V power)
The last mile of the journey I hit around #45
Filled up
Come off the forecourt with the back end in another lane
Persisted on hitting the limiter in 4 gears and climbing in 5th.
Once in urban surrounding and tootling at 30 I started to hear a ticking which slowly got louder.

I used NCB to change a turbo on my 530d, although they're on my doorstep wouldnt use them again, ever, not even to change a spark plug...Nuff said.

So.........................

You have w@nkered your engine because you have banged it off the limiter before the oil was warm

Good one,fair play Dan..

 I thought it was warm Gaz. Was on 90 degrees. Maybe I should of waited a while before bouncing it off the red line. Patience is a virtue...... it's also fucking expensive.

Rebuild and upgrade it is then

If the oil temp was at 90 degrees you really should be able to do what ya want...

But the S54 can be a bit fragile ...

It's a hard lesson learned

Applaud your honesty Dan , who , where , when were the valve clearances last done ? That may also factor in the engines demise

lol there's no point in lying about it, takes a bigger man to admit when their in the wrong.
The car has covered 3k hard miles since the car was put back together. The impact the car was involved in was sufficient enough to smash all auxiliaries off the block. So the answer to the valve clearance question is........ I haven't a clue.

For anyone else...please don't let the car sit on the drive 'warming up', as that doesn't get the oil circulating properly, not does it warm up the gearbox or diff oils properly/at all.

BMW even say to just get in and drive it. Just keep the revs below the levels indicated, with no fulll-bore acceleration until the warm up lights have gone off.

But these engines seem to have some random issues anyway, as there's doesn't seem to by any 100% realisable way to say which will go bang and which won't.

Taking it like a trooper, good lad!

Seems fair to have assumed at 90 the oil would be warm but then I don't know these engines. An expensive lesson either way.
