After driving my car very hard yesterday, she developed a loud ticking noise like the one in the video. Anyone help? Or is it best to get on M3 cutters?

Doesn't sound good, does it!

It sounds like it's from the top end, so possibly VANOS, valve/shim related - so a top-end strip is likely.

Whatever it is, I assume it will recovered/trailered to a local specialist!

It's top end mate. Sounds like the valves are trying to escape the head lol. Yes it will be recovered.
Quite gutted really because Saturday my mechanic got my 2.8 straight 6 E28 running after sitting 20 years, then Sunday I kill another straight 6 lol. Just need a real good specialist

Would have a bet on cam followers...

Needs the cams checking for damage too..

 the main bit is finding someone capable of the work. As you know upto now I've had a nightmare with chancers.

NCB I have used in the past. Didn't complete the work I asked for and when I suspected head gasket a while ago, asked for a quote and he didn't get back to me. Also stated they had never done one. That's one specialist/fitter out the running
Strange, as I know they've worked on S54s before (my mate keeps his CSL there), and has done plenty on S38 engines too. Not the easiest place to get to/from or find though - a bit off the normal commuter routes!

I have a set of stock cams sitting around, possibly matched followers too.. I'd suggest not to drive it at all mate, cos if it is followers, they go fast..

I'm gonna give Noel a call tomorrow and see what he says. He had my car for a while in the early days. Think he will be quite shocked at the transformation since he last seen it. After fixing this engine issue, think I could of bought a GTR or a Maserati Grand turismo lol.

Thank you for the offer. I'll be in touch as soon as the issues is diagnosed. Is there an upgrade?
I'll fix this problem, give the car pure death and it will be broke again in 6 months

As for specialists...you've got Autotech, Telford, Moseley Motorsport, Telford or NCB Autokraft in Earlswood, Solihull (sorry no website link).

For both the M and other BMW's I have used a number of specialist in Brum.

I am very local to NCB and do not use anymore for similar reasons to yourself, I used and recommended him to a couple of friends and family based on reputation and location but the standards significantly slipped as he employed more and more less experienced spanner monkeys.

I tried Jo Darby in Redditch and was also left cold, OK for general BMW stuff but would not use for the M again.

Moved a little further afield to Autobahn Servicing in Halesowen and felt much more like it; in the know on the S54, good facilities and some heavy metal been looked after. Good feedback on M3Cutters, felt like they understood people who like cars rather than just see cash generators.
