I am truly shocked at reading this! Potentially a bottom end rebuild every 30,000 miles?? At at least £2K parts and labour?!? This is enough to put a petrol head like me off the S54 engine!! :-o :-o

Show me 1 set of bearings that has done that mileage and hasnt got the telltale wearspots in it and I believe you....LostBoy_84 said:There's cars out there that have done 100k plus on the original bearings and have been fine.

Always good to hear both sides of a story

Indeed, but despite that, I'll be changing them again at 100k miles.

That an engine is running doesnt mean its fine. Once it's seizing you can buy a new engine if you're unlucky, so there is no real option to wait until the problem emerges. You cant say 'lets wait until it starts and then quickly change the bearings', by then its way to late.
Look at this like a cambelt. Many cars will run far longer after its recommended change (might even do twice or 3 times as long), but the potential risk of breaking will be very costly.

Is this a problem just with Ms? Should I worry about a 2003 2.5i ? :?Vanne said:Mmmm
