S2000 Board Comments

LOL what do S2K owner know?

How to celebrate their coming 17 yr old birthday??

(Dont get me wrong, S2K is a nice lowend asian sporty car)

I looked at the S2000 when I bought my first zed, I just didn't get it.

Smaller engine, less interior room, cheaper made and noisy

I love the S2 and I'm hoping to see and S3. But I have driven them more than once and you pretty much have to drive it like you stole it to get to the power. I also thought the interior rather plain and down market. I very much like the understated yet graceful Z4 interior. But I suppose people do get very narrow sighted about the cars they are passionate about.

I drove she S2k and loved it... loved the feeling of speed when you ragged the arse off it! That said, was less than impressed with the interior, no heated seats, and a semi-manual roof... just took the edge off, for me.

I always thought the windscreen seemed really upright, especially after being in the Z4, always seemed weird. And no heated seats is a big minus point for me too.

You definatly had to drive it like hell to get the most out of it.

Of course I feel that way about my M, Drive it like you stole it for the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

Yep, I think the S2000 is a great car and it's always good to see one on the road.

It feels special to be in, looks great with the hardtop on and the gearchange is the best I've tried.

But I've driven a Honda with a VTEC engine for several years now (I love Honda's bulletproof, high-revving engines) and thought it was time for a change.

I really was that close to buying a 1 year old S2000 GT in August last year but the lure of a car with a straight six engine was hard to resist. The fact the ///M costs no more to tax, is cheaper to insure, doesn't use much more fuel and revs to 8,000 rpm (just like my old car) but is quieter and more refined on the motorway and has more punch at lower rpm eased me through a hard decision.

I'm very pleased with the ///M coupe, but also think I would have enjoyed owning an S2000 (and might wish I had come service time :D ).

I find it hard to see why anyone who is genuinely interested in cars (as I assume anyone that buys an S2000 would be) could fail to see the merits of the Z4, and vice versa. And IMO any serious criticism based on a comparison of the interior, or the cars' residual values is just plain daft - last time I looked the S2000 didn't seem to be holding up too well either.

Spotted a S2000 for 7.5k at my local dealer with 75000 miles - seems like a bargain. Great cars but that Vtec thing means you have to rev the balls off it...

I think the Z4M could look a bit more aggressive but the M cars aren't meant to be, that's the point of them I always thought!

The S2000 used to ok, the engine might rev to 9k, but it’s gutless lower down the rev range. You constantly have to make use of the gear shift which is a novelty at first, but it soon becomes tiresome after a while, even though it’s slick to use
Then there is the overall look, the car is horribly dated now, it looked good in late nineties, but the front end is too pointy, the overall shape is very feminine and bit gay looking imo
The interior is very driver focused, but feels very flimsy and looks/is cheap, the dash is a joke, like something out of ‘knight rider’ and the steering has no feel what so ever.

It’s a car that doesn’t quite deliver in a few key area, steering feedback, interior quality, engine flexibility, it basically feels like a flimsy toy compared to the German stuff.
Honda haven’t really updated the S2000 (there has been minors change to the wheels, bumpers and suspension), which really shows when you compare it to more modern rivals, it’s dropped behind the competition due to lack of development

As an ex-s2000 owner and ex-member of s2k.com I can tell you that most of what is being said here is correct. It's not very fast inless you rev the SH£$ out of it and then it's far too slidey at the back in all but dry weather. They have now made traction control standard but it's taken them 10 years. Have a look at their "how to" and you'll see how many have retro fitted traction to stop themselves from making a group 20 mess.

I liked mine a lot but really because it was a pussycat in slow traffic as I used it everyday. I don't have to use my ZM everyday so now prefer something that's more of an event to drive. I used to keep the hardtop on my s2k all the time because it had a bigger rear window (the s2000s is tiny) and also looked better. I guess I was destined for a coupe................

S2000's still a pretty car for me. But the interior is a little lacking in options. You can buy a new one for about £21k which has to be a pretty good deal . It's amazing to think it's outlasted the Z4 with virtually no changes

hehe.... the outside is cool but the digital speedo, looks like a 1980's stop watch... If the japanese figure that bit out they will get more buyers, steal the boxster and Z4 owner :P only my thoughts :D

 I've just sold one of these as it happens. I've had two S2000s, and two Z cars (a 3 and a 4, both 231hp 3.0i). I was on S2KI but rarely posted other than in the beginning when searching for a car, and at the end when selling.

The Z's are better day to day cars IMHO. The Honda's are great for a thrash but as outrun says it does become a little tiresome. Because you have to rev them to get the performance they are no better on fuel than the 3 litre BMW in my experience, and yes, they cost more to insure (the Z4M is about £50 less for me than my S2000) and tax as well.

It really is horses for courses. I can see the attraction in both the BMWs and Hondas but at the end of the day every brand will have a few idiots on its internet forum that sling mud at other brands.

FWIW, the two Honda's I had never missed a beat. No problems whatsoever. They may indeed feel fragile but they are very reliable cars. The Z3 had a couple of minor issues as did the Z4. Minor trim issues however and I wouldn't put the Honda above the BMW just because of that. The S2000 doesn't need TCS really, IMHO, if the driver has some previous RWD experience and drives as the conditions dictate. Tyre choice is very important however.

Hey at least we collectively have LSD unlike some of our other (expensive) German competitor brands!

I had a test drive in an s2000 a while back and it made a good impression to be fair. I almost spat my beer out when I saw the comments about the Z4's interor lol the s2000 if I was being generous is yawn inducing.

Overall I dont think you can compare the two. The Z4M is in a different league to the s2000.

Some argue that Honda made the S2000 right and it didn`t need much development. For example it wouldn`t be easy to extract more power from that little engine.

I`ve always prefered the Z4 but the S2000 lost out even more to the Z4 when it received the 3.0 265bhp engine.

The S2000 is a good car in it`s own right but doesn`t make a great everyday car. I drove an 06 S2000 and I could cruise around in 5th at lower speeds but that was thanks to gearing. Cruising at 80mph on the motorway I`m sure is a lot less economical in the S2000 than the Z4 3.0 Si. I considered buying an S2000 until I saw sense and held out for the Z4 Coupe. The cabin in the S2000 also very cramped I felt.
