Rust on differential

Hi everyone,

so I have been getting some strange clunks coming from my diff recently and after a bad experience I had from various shops disassembling it, I have decided that I am better of with a diff swap. Here in Greece, second hand diffs cost at least 400 euros. After searching on ebay I found a diff located in the UK that cost 85 euro. The guy says that it is from a Z that he drove for 3 weeks before taking it apart and that the diff seemed tight and with no clunking sounds etc. The diff is so cheap that I thought it's worth the risk. If the internal parts are ok is something we can only find out after the diff is on the car.

My question has to do with Rust. From the images I saw that there is quite a bit of rust on the outside of the diff. This is something I will scrub off but I was wondering if this rust could cause problems in the long run. Here in Greece rust is not common as in the UK so I am guessing maybe for many of you this rust on the diff is pretty common.

I would like to hear some of your experiences please.

I imagine this will only be surface rust so I'd just clean it off and paint the diff in some high temp paint :)

That will be fine

Bit of top rust that easy to clean off

Diff casings are very thick, so a bit of top rust isn't a problem

Thanks! I will give it a good scrub with a brush and some cleaning agent. Let's hope the internals are working fine. Normally these diffs are pretty much bullet proof. I will change the oil and fingers crossed.

Looks fine to me, just general UK weather, and the fact that it IS rusty near the sealing faces means it probably doesn't leak oil!

That sounds good! :)

The seller did mention also that all oil seals are good and there are no oil leaks so adding to your comment I am hoping I got a good deal

More important than a bit of surface rust you need to know what exact model, year, engine size and auto/manual it came off.

You could end up with the wrong final drive ratio..

It's from the same car as mine. 04' 2.5 M54 with 3.23 ratio.
