Running in

With the new 35is (hopefully) being ready just a few weeks away I'm pondering the running in process and wondered if anyone had any thoughts, my own thinking is do some long runs, at low revs obviously, so that the engine beds in with plenty of oil flowing around rather than lots of short runs as that means the engine will be turned over a lot more from cold and the, albeit brief, oil starvation on startup.
Any thoughts appreciated thanks. :)

Yep, avoid too many short runs. Long runs are fine but you do want to vary the revs, don't just run it for hours at the same revs, it will bed in better with a variation. There's little to get wrong other than don't do too many short runs and don't rev it highly ideally until after 1-1.5K miles.

Once my Merc arrives, it will get a mix of short runs plus some weekend away runs to get those miles piled on quickly. I need all I can get when I'm reduced to 184bhp!

Good point on varying the low revs Maniac, I would've prob tended to keep them fairly constant.

Not sure which merc you're getting but I've still got my dads 2008 c 180 kompressor which is a 5 door floaty big-ish cruiser and it's got plenty tbh, goes very very well.

Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated.

Hi John,

I'm trying not to use mine for any short runs to start with, but occasionally it's no big issue.

For the first 250 miles just letting everything bed in, not pushing the car at all. Occasional higher revs, but in general driving very sensibly.

I will continue to do this for the first 1,000 miles with gradual increases in the amount I push round bends, the loud pedal at the right and manual usage of the DCT.

After this I will drive normally. Normally is still fairly sedate compared to many around here I'm sure

Sound advice cheers Andy, I'll mainly use the manual option as well.

I'm no loon either but I don't reckon we'll be able to resist the odd throttle 'squeeze' now and again.

Sorry. Just to be clearer. I'm leaving the car mainly in Auto mode and normal Drive / Sport at the moment. I am only rarely using Manual and never using Sport+. Generally (once worn in) I use manual when either pushing on or wanting to make a swift pass.

I've been testing the throttle already and it's fair to say I'd forgotten how fast the car is. But even these bursts are gentler / shorter than they could be.

I've had a few M cars from new previously and I see no reason not to treat my new baby with any less care than those. Even if it doesn't need a 1,200 mile service it still produces more power than my E46 M3 or either of my M Roadsters (Z3 and Z4 based).

------ when I'm reduced to 184bhp

How times have changed!

Way back, a very fast car ie Lotus Cortina was 108 Bhp then of course there was the Saab turbo - 147 Bhp
They were just two very fast and desirables of the time. Now we complain of being reduced to 184 Bhp!

I suppose we are the victims of progress.

I'd say 1000 miles, nothing over 3000 revs, warm the car a little after start up, and make sure you you have good looking woman in the driver seat

Job done

Well when your daily is over 300hp, 184 sounds like a snail.

Modern cars are lardarses though so need more power, the Lotus Cortina had a kerb weight of 905kg so 119bhp/tonne the C200 estate is 1525kg so comes in at 120bhp/tonne

Don't know what that proves but I bet you couldn't pull the girls in a C200 the way you used to be able to in a Lotus Cortina

I know what you mean, my wife's shopping car is 250 (ish)Bhp!
When she road tested the car before we bought it, she comprehensively broke the speed limit!

Ok whatever else takes your fancy 8)

Kinda meant why would she be in the driving seat and not passenger....but as Perrygun has pointed out, I'm gonna crack a tinnie, sit back and watch this one now.....stuff the running in topic. Hav'nt you got enough injuries at the mo mate..? :poke:

My shoulders and arms have been broken, what more have I got to lose? I wasnt actually relating the Carol comment to the previous but I can see how it looks.....I guess I better get used to going back to the hospital again!!

Thrash the tits off it from getting it out the show room, it's under warranty :)

I used to do this to new bikes I had and it's been proven on many a dyno that they produce more and have better power than a bike that been run in for miles and miles.

Give it the beans and enjoy it :driving:

That's the last thing I'd do but your

'Thrash the tits off it' comment made me smile!!

Mate it's his pride and joy, warranty or no warranty....it's not the done thing!!!
