immense fun. hmm
My experience of services personnel ~ a Navy SBS Captain (ret) for a mate. He absolutely loved the operations.

they were what he lived for.

Like I said there's some 'nutters'! The special services are an elite and different minded bunch. 'Normal' personnel like my son & his colleagues are who I am talking about.

a great thread and there are some very personal and emotive viewpoints.

I like that our armed forces have higher standards but i think it works against us sometimes but overall I am glad we do.

We train people to operate in the most unimaginable scenarios and hope they do the right things, mostly they do.

I would have leniency for the soldier, I would not be proud if it were my daughter, but i don't think it is cut and dried or the same as a civilian murder by any means, I hope that our higher standards extend to getting that soldier the help that he clearly needs. I think that its an internal military matter and im not sure that we are able to judge the situation

I also think that there are many politicians and leaders that make bad decisions in their job that are never made accountable - and lives are invariably involved then too.

My last comment tho is that I don't believe that our recent conflicts are making a better or safer Britain. We aren't in any risk at all of invasion and I think we make terrorists with every bullet we fire. But that doesn't detract from the bravery and professionalism of the people on the front line.

Carol - I'm so sorry that your son is out there - every day it must be a constant worry for you as a mother - my own son was in the army a few years back but thankfully not in today's conflict - I know that if he was still serving my wife and I , whilst being immensely proud , would be worrying about him 24/7. You must also feel very proud of him and quite rightly so.

He's not out there at the min. The tour where his mate got killed is passed, thankfully.
He's had a few mates killed there actually, including his best mate.

I am extremely proud of him but like you say, the worry is unbelievable. He did a tour in Iraq which was nearly as bad. You just have to try and switch off somehow.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments, much appreciated. :)

I found that most of those that i served with had noted something similar to a come down after being under stress for a long period of time, and actively sought out thrilling / scary things to do to raise the stress levels. fast bikes/cars /extreme sports /women

mostly though this was accomplished in the home by having massive rows with the wife..
speaking from experience

You know what Tim, you don't come across as a very nice person and I find you very patronising.

You called a few of us attention seekers because we were having a bit of fun on another post, your comments to me when I posted about the night we passed an upturned car in the road and not to mention the stunt you pulled on Hunter on the zedroadster forum.
You were referred to as a troll on that thread and actually you are.

I put your name in capitals to draw your attention as you made another comment along with a poke smilie and then when you get asked about it three times you pointedly ignore it.
Don't post s**t then refuse to back it up with an explanation.
