Royal hospital nurse who took hoax call from DJs found dead

UK / world attention | mocked by fellow employees | a mistake you cannot correct

These example alone would put someone under considerable pressure and paranoia

Depending on the mental strength of the person anything is possible, in this sad case suicide...

Spot on

Mock not,Stuart..i still am convinced the royals had a hand in Princess Diana's death, tbh.(given she was said to be pregnant, and due to marry dodi fayed;something the royals would have hated,i reckon)

Dont see them going to that extreme for this case though/but,unless she was fragile, why would this nurse commit suicide over a crank call? just doesnt add up.
We will probably never know the truth :|

It's sad that anyone believes that life is so intolerable that death is the only way out

Well I read that people assume this innocent person had other issues. However imagine being scammed or duped and then think about the whole world knowing about it. Her reputation was destroyed at the expense of fame and fun. She was mocked for being dumb enough to fall for the stupid accents, who knows what was said to her within the hospital. and this played out on the world stage. this was not a savvy Celeb, but a nurse just going about her job. Commentators went on about how she could be sacked and questioned how she could make such a mistake. No doubt she has also had the world media chasing her none stop. This poor woman was quite possibly frantic at the thought of potentially losing her career, and very reasonably upset about being a laughing stock world wide. Everyone is different, and everyone handles that sort of thing differently. Maybe it was some kind of last straw for this woman, but certainly it could, and should, have been avoided. Shame on those who made sure that this woman’s last few days were unbearable.

I feel for her family, and find the whole thing so sad and such a waste of a life.

The story has been all over the news on this side of the pond as well. One of the reports stated that the radio station involved is currently on probation for undisclosed other issues and this might result in the station being closed down. Also, the program that made the call has been suspended....

Very sad... :x

im with you on both counts. both sound very suspect to me and will serve as a lesson to anyone who wrongs them

Saddened at this whole sorry story. Of course the two presenters would not have gone through with the prank knowing now the consequences. As for ratings... what gives the radio programme the right to dupe someone in this way and make them a victim to attract more listeners???

Been reading this, and now watching the media focus on what happened... It is a tragedy, terrible that someone feels they have to take their life, such a waste.

However, I feel that some of you need to wake up to the irony here - everyone is going on about the radio station who made the call as if it is their 'fault', and again the same is true on the TV this morning.... when in actual fact it seems to me that the real catalyst for the tragedy was the total media hysteria that followed the news of the call being reported in the press and on the TV. I'd say the BBC or the Sun (for example) are infinitely more responsible than those who did something that happens every day all over the world... And we all have a great laugh about it when we hear it or get sent a link on YouTube. I think, yet again, the news reporting media have a lot to answer to here.

Absolutely spot on Bing

Completely tragic waste of life but IMO it's almost exclusively driven by the media. Hoaxes like what the DJs did happen everyday all over the world, but they don't result in someone taking their life 99.99999999999999% of the time. Robin Galloway on my local station (Forth 1) does serious wind ups every week which make some folk look really stupid, but it's all for our entertainment. How many of us posted a link to, or commented on, the news story/sound recording of the DJ's hoax when it was in the news earlier this week?

The reporting media have a LOT to answer for :x

I think everyone is jumping to major conclusions here. She clearly had other issues going on.

The media loves a witch-hunt so now it turns it's attention to these two DJ's and won't stop until it thinks it's destroyed them for their "crime". Stupid idea? Yes but aren't most pranks? Inappropriate ringing up a hospital? Yes. But who in their right mind would've suggested the other day that someone would top themselves.

It's very sad but nobody yet has any idea why this women took her own life. It's all just speculation at this stage.

I thought she was the nurse that disclosed the info. Apparently she was simply the one that put them through. As Ruby and others have said, the poor woman must have had other stuff going on in her life. I don't think the press are to blame either, they weren't camping outside the poor woman's house or anything like that. The 2 DJs are just idiots, we've all done dumb stuff. It's just a tragic set of circumstances. If I was in the position to dig, I'd want to know what her employers said to her and her colleague after they handled the calls. I bet it wasn't "oh dear, never mind, sh1t happens"

I wonder if her colleague who actually did disclose personal stuff will go public on what happened at work afterwards. I bet they're handling her with kid gloves now...

this is so sad that she decided it was the only way out,
there must have been other issues. being depressed isn't always easy to spot we have all used the term I'm feeling depressed which usually passes but if it lasts (clinical depression) you would have thought her work colleagues might have seen a change in her being. ie crying, being restless, lack of concentration even down to self harming at its extreme.

being depressed and admitting it is hard to do, but you must talk and ask for help its the first step to recovery.

as for those two aussies they will be feeling pretty terrible give them 3-6 months and they will be back a little wiser, as for the family of Jacintha Saldahna they might never get over it.

Yepp all needs some perspective, I feel so sorry for the DJs in question :(

Tim.

er, can't feel the same sorry

If someone topped themselves because of something like that they probably would have done it anyways further down the line if it hadn't have happened. It doesn't take much when someone is that far down the line.

The prank I thought was quite funny, the death isn't.

Tim.

Isn't it a crime to impersonate someone anyway? If I pretend to be a police officer, I get the book thrown at me, so isn't impersonating someone else to obtain information / goods or whatever which you would not have obtained otherwise, a crime in itself?

We must not forget where this woman comes from as well, which I think plays a major part in her response. She was Indian, and shame can be very extreme for those people, similarly that they can kill their children if they have brought shame on the family. Perhaps the thought of the shame was enough to punish herself like this.

We have seen Japanese business people committing suicide due to the perceived shame they feel if the company makes a loss or so.

I think people are being harsh of the DJ's. People play pranks all the time and no one complains then when no one kills themselves, so not sure why people are being so critical towards them.

If this nurse truly killed herself for this one reason then IMHO she's selfish fool.
