Advice please, when I come to lower the roof it starts off okay then stops about a foot over. Could this be the roof motor on its way out?
The drainage holes are open and water is running freely.
The car is in for a service on Saturday so I’ll get him to take a look at it.
Has anyone had the motor replaced and if so how much would I be looking at?

Roof Motors are about £125/£150 Pumps are about £150 too.
If your motor is able to pull the roof back from the windscreen and pass the top Apex, then its OK as that is the hardest part for it. After that gravity should take over until the last bit where it needs to suck it down and compact it as it folds.

You could try pulling the red hoop and check that the roof can physically fold flat and that nothing is obstructing it. Has anything been left on the rear shelf thats blocking it from a complete fold ?
 
Hi this happened to mine make sure the shelf in the boot is at it’s lowest if its
up it won’t go down hope this helps.
If it is the roof motor a guy called Durham Dave on this site will sort it for you.

If that shelf isn’t in its lowest position the roof won’t move at all, this seems a different issue as the roof starts it’s operation but fails to complete it :thumbsup:

You’re right, assuming the microswitch is intact and not shorted due to a previous defect with a lazy owner. If the switch is bypassed roof opens regardless of shelf position.

I would check the shelf none the less, and after that try to check the roof through manual operation.
 
Thanks for the advice, the shelf is all the way down.

I would of thought if the roof motor was broke or on its way out then it wouldn’t go part way right? .. It was working fine yesterday.

Also does the roof Power closed ok? If so you can discount any issues with the motor, however it is not in common for the pump to be weak in just one direction.

Try the above and report back

Hi mate,

I’ve just had another look, and when I press to open it just unclips and nothing happens. I try and manually fold the roof back but there seems to be an obstruction on the first fold over if you know what I mean? .. clips back in fine.
 
Usually thats the classic (Hydraulic) motor fail, if it unclips from the windscreen and then stops a couple of inches back. The fact that you said it was just not going the last foot gave a different impression.
The unclipping is driven by a different motor in the hood itself that opens the claws by means of a worm drive.

Unclip it, then pull the red hoop in the boot,(the hydraulic bypass) and see if it will then fold back easily ?

I’ve tried pulling the red hoop mate but there is no give in it?
 
OK. That means your bypass valve is also seized which is also quite typical after 11-17 years of never being activated.

You’re going to need the motor out of the car and inspected/serviced.

Where are you located as there’s a few of us who offer the service ?

I have the same problem as this and need the motor replacing.
I'm based in East Sussex. Do you know who would be the closest person to offer this service (and how to contact them?)

Hi mate,

I’ve been in touch with Bowser134 as he fixes these. My roof decided to come down yesterday but won’t today. This I believe is good news because If they are in water they can be intermittent. If it is intermittent then that’s a good sign as it’s not totally dead and means he will be able to recondition the motor.

Get in touch with him pal. :thumbsup:

There used to be a guy called Mike on the forum doing these in the NW, but a few years ago there was a big falling out over a modified back-box someone bought from him that never turned up and no refund ether.

Which was a shame as he replaced the rear brake pipes in copper on my 2nd E86 in 2016 and cut and coded a key for me and I was very happy with what he did and what he charged.

Anyway he is trading as the Zed Shed NorthWest based in WA12 - you'll find him on Facebook. :thumbsup:
