Roof - Sh1t my pants!

So heres the scenario....

1st day I had to go into the office since when the lockdown started.

Sunny morning, vintage roof down weather and 13 mile drive on twisty country roads.

Get in car, buckle up and start engine. Press roof open button, boot raises backwards, both roof sections retract into the boot then the boot...doesn't come down!

Then I pressed the close button, the two roof sections return to normal position and the boot closes.

At first I thought it was because I'd parked my car forwards on the drive, so the rear end was slanting down, so when I got to some level road I pulled over and tried again. Same thing happened.

Came home tonight, tried again and same thing. So when the boot was up and roof in the boot I got out and pushed the roof sections about a little bit, I didn't realise there would be any movement, but there is a little.

Tried it again and its ok now. Opened/closed it about 4 times in a row, faultless each time.

Any ideas? I don't have a code reader and this is the first time its happened but a bit concerned. As the boot up/down operation was fine I'm wondering if its a sensor not detecting the roof sections were fully retracted? Or could it be something stiff due to being parked up for a while?

I guess time will tell but now my ar$e will clench each time I use it.

I also noticed one of the luggage cover connection bits (the black plastic bits that hold the luggage cover to the metal bar) came loose last week (the bottom fell off) and I've seen people fix it with bolts. How do I take it out?

Is it a case of undoing these bolts and sliding it out?

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't want the other side to break.

As you face the open boot and shut the luggage compartment inside there are brackets that it clips into. The bracket on the left has a sensor under it and the clip in section has a magnet attached. This is how the car knows the compartment is closed when you open the roof up.

Thanks.

The roof retracted with no problems, so it seems it was happy that the cover was inplace, but its interesting that you say there is a sensor on the left side, as it is the left side bracket thats broke and I have possibly been a little "careful" in moving the cover.

That’s a hall sensor

Hi, if its the black plastic clamp (left on your photo) has come apart, then you don't need to take the shelf out, easy repair: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=110340

I had a similar problem. The car had not been used very much for a while since lockdown . When I finally got in, the roof started to open and then I got the bong ..! It then wouldn’t close either. Turned it all off and on again. Then it closed... phew. Consulted the forum and one of the possible causes was a low battery charge. So I took the car out on a hot day with the lid on. Came back after an hours drive and pressed the button ... No bong and the roof works again . Thank heavens for the forum !

Would rather take it out for better access from underneath.

My battery had been on ctec for a week but hadn’t been driven before that for weeks (not on charger).

It’s the risk of not closing that gets me....Sod’s law says it’ll be miles from home!

Saying that, it could be battery related perhaps....start/stop has never worked in this car since I’ve had it and previous to lockdown I had some random alarm activations.

If it’s a 2011 battery it’s past it’s sell by date by some way..

I purchased and fitted this one yesterday to replace my original battery
