Roof Repair - Peterborough

Looking for someone near Peterborough that can do a non-bmw garage/ private 2007 Z4 roof repair.

It's very slow but does goes up and down.

Guessing it's a motor issue....

Any suggestions. Thanks.

Mine is okay but it needs doing before the inevitable happens. I live just north of you and we appear to live in a black hole as regards anyone near us. There has been a recent thread on the same issue from owners in Norfolk and Suffolk with the same issue. If anyone in our area learns how to do the relocation they will certainly have plenty of customers

Sorry guys I deliberately went to the garage this morning to get an answer and he wasn't positive about it.

If you can hold tight my other mate (now working off shore in Qatar for 6 weeks) reckons he can do it based in Norwich.

FYI he was head mechanic at Mann Egerton (for those in Norfolk will know the name) and as luck would have it he is a short arse which might be "handy"

I will keep you updated on his return.

Back to the first mechanic, he had to "outer shell" in which the motor is placed and he said if it ain't broke dont fix it. Its water tight albeit lies in a pool of water but if it doesn't leak then its not harming the motor.

It might seem water tight but it deffo isn't. The main problem is where the hydro lines enter the holder. Water from either washing or rain will slowly but surely ride up the lines into the holder and in time will fill the holder up :o

The only way to eliminate this completely is relocate the motor into the boot. :)

Cheers, tug

Hey all,

Resurrecting this, as still not fixed.

The hood goes back fine and fairly quick.
Trying to get it forward is a pig - takes an age or stops.

Anyone near Peterborough?

Or happy to drive a decent distance - Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincs, MK, North of London.

There is a guy in Bishop Aukland (Durham Dave ) who does this Highly recommended. i was on one of the Z facebook pages the other day and someone had it done at a garage in Northampton so that is in the middle or you have Ross who is near Basingstoke i believe who again is Highly Recommended.

Unfortunately for you you have a bit of a drive wherever you go.

Stuart

I would give it a go yourself, I done mine without any issues and I am by no means good with cars. There are plenty guides about and as long as you take your time and follow them you should have no issues.

Mine went from working fine to being very slow opening/closing to completely dying within a few weeks.

Thanks Stuart :)

Yes I can repair and relocate your roof motor. I’m on the Hants/Surrey border.

Update on this.

So the car is currently in Bridlington with my parents (who are in their 70s).

They took it to a back street garage in Scarbough.
Guy said it was cables needing greasing (seriously!).
Then said new motor and pump but needed to order it and £500 repair. I told my dad that I bet he's ordered it off ebay in Bradford.
Roll in three weeks - dad chased the garage to be told part hasn't arrived yet, from ebay!.
Car is now back and booked in to Filey but bjt for three weeks - now saying £700 for recon motor or £1500 for genuine parts.

Anyone near Brid, Scarborough or North Yorkshire that fancies doing this?

Just had mine done Wednesday at Autoelectron in Knaresborough with a 2 year warranty for 375 :driving:

i love it when noobs come here for advice - we give it and they ignore it. makes me feel all warm inside.. 8)

Thanks Tich. I'll check them out.

@metal licker - my folks are in there mid seventies and I'm two hundred miles from them south. Just wondered if anyone is nearer, hence the additional post and shout out.

I can't do it myself, self admitted useless mechanically.

Knaresborough is prob best shout but still 1.5 hours away, Durham is 2. 5 hours away and Hants would be maybe 7-8 hours and an overnight.

@road warrior - and being on other forums, not car forums, I love it when arrogant senior members make nasty comments for no real reason.

Why do people feel the need to do it?

Newbie asking for help but given options miles from home, so asks again if anyone is closer and gets slagged off by a senior member.

Really appreciated - thanks for your help RW :-(

I understand (I'm based in Norfolk) the frustration with having to travel to get work done and having to deal with aged parents in the other corner of the country (North West) - let alone let them arrange things for me. However search the posts on this site about roof motors and its evident that there are only five or so members who move and revive motors for members as a service.

When you first asked I assumed the car was in Peterborough - about a two or three hours drive from any of four of the movers I know of between the south coast and Warrington. Not close but easily a day trip and that's about as good as it gets. You now have the car in Bridlington (or perhaps it never left your parents if they haven't physically given it to you yet ) which like Norfolk/Suffolk is another black hole for roof repairs and the only mover (not a member) close to your car is Durham Dave - in well Durham! - but again an easy day trip from there over the North York moors and up the A1/A19. Nice day out for the parents at your expense!

So its either time or money - time to now get your car and take it or money to a garage. Go get the car and take it to Peterborough if you can keep it there. Then make a day trip to get it fixed by a member - around 20 mins work to move and £100. They are experienced and because of this quick. In the main garages are not experienced they replace not repair; they have to work out what they are doing (which you pay for in time) and charge upwards of £70 an hour. Its your car; your money and of course your choice but a lot of members on here have been round for a fair amount of time - the forum doesn't charge membership but the advice people give away is worth a fortune. I'm sorry if you feel slighted but a more balanced forum I've yet to find (and people type in full sentences not text speak) but members here get fed up sometimes with people joining only to sell cars or when they have a problem and then vanishing again.

I notice you have posted about two problems now - no pics of the car like other newbies though. What type of forum member will you be? ..... over to you but the experience here will be far richer if you accept we are a virtual room full of enthusiastic Zed owners and like any room full of people are different ages and personalities. We have answers but can't magic repairs in your ( and mine as it happens) area if there are non or make decisions for you. We do not however tell you information which is deliberately wrong. In fact a group of us paid a member to come to Cambridge/Peterborough area a couple of years ago and move motors all day for us because the service was not available locally. Check the old threads there is still a group in Norwich area thinking about this or doing it them selves.

Remember its your first roof motor - we've seen plenty.
