You never owned a Z3 then. Or a mid 80's RX7. Or any american car....

Seriously, I have this rattle too and it is driving me crazy, but then I just put the top down and it is all smiles. :D I will fix this, but this is a small inconvenience to put up with for such a beautiful car. Think of it as character. Hell, have you ever owned an Alfa? How about an old Porsche? The Z4 is built like a tank compared to those cars. If you want no rattles, get a coupe or a 5 series. I had a 90 535i. A tank. Amazing highway hauler. Boring though, except it had LSD which I miss a lot.

Ok, I'm rambling. I'll stop. Anyone found this rattle and fixed it? I just searched the forums and found nothing.

Mine is now fixed. It is a dealer fix and has to do with the rear shocks. Someone else on here had it done after me. Car is now 100% and rattle free. I could have bet my life it was coming from roof. hope this helps. :D

I just figured out what was rattling, now I just don't know how to take it apart to quiet the noise. I discovered that where the plastic covering that meets the rubber gasket on the body won't rattle if I hold my hand against that piece while I am driving. It won't rattle with the top down (or I can't hear it because of the wind), but it is quite annoying otherwise. Here's a pic.

My finger is pointing at the joint that I think is rattling. The plastic to the left of my finger is what I press against to stop the rattling. Now to find a fix. I have removed that plastic cover over the hard top mounting point to try and find the rattle.

:? I can't make out what part of the car that is from the pic?

Open your driver's door with the top down. You are looking at what would be the lower half of the C pillar. My finger is pointing at the intersection where the top comes down to meet the sheetmetal/rubber. To the left of my finger you see part of the driver's seat. This picture was taken from me squating with the door open facing the rear of the vehicle. :P
