Roof rattle????

I have an annoying little rattle just behind the driver seat. It appears to be at head height but I can not source it. It obviously only rattles on a rouh surface. I know they are prone to the odd rattle but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :(

Is it more like a squeak than a rattle? If so, then it is a WELL known problem that has a fix in the How-To section. The clip that holds the top down has a piece on it to prevent the two metals (the hook and the bar) from rubbing... in time this material wears out and the metal hook starts rubbing the metal bar. You can take to dealer to have fixed or you can do it yourself with a small piece of fabric or the carpet side of a piece of velcro with self adhesive on the back of it. I just let mine wear down to the point where the metal no longer rubs (about 3 months of putting up with the squeak).

[edit] here ya go. I found it for ya http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7 there are pics on the bottom of page one of the fix. Let me know if that is what you've got. If not, I can offer up some other suggestions.

Hi Dogman

Happy Xmas! Hows the new car... apart from the rattle? Think I may have passed you a couple of weekends ago going opposite directions on the M1 at Oxford Island?

Cannot remember if you got the OEM wind deflector kit fitted when you bought it? If so, it could be the small plastic screen that fits inside the roll-hoop.... mine rattles over badly surfaced roads. If not, just above the release button for the centre storage box there is an identical that doesn't do anything (for manual roof versions aparently..) mine rattled too, try putting some tape over it to eliminate...

BTW, I started filling up with BP Ultimate - had heard you can notice a difference - and really, there is some difference. Gives noticeably more poke and smoother running too... try it! Worth the extra few beans....

Also... could it be the shelf in the boot? If you look at the rear wall in the boot you can see a slot with a microswitch that the shelf lowers into (stops you lowering the roof if shelf it up). Mine rattled there too... put some felt tape in there and its fine....

BTW, on 2006/2007 facelift models the roof does not lock down then the roof is open - you can actually lift it 1-2inches at the front edge. Don't worry, this is normal. You'll also notice that you don't have an emergency roof release on the back wall of the boot either... just a small hole in the carpet!

I have the wind deflector but it is not it. I have tried the shelf thing as well but no joy. Due to work etc only have 700 odd miles on the car so I think I will leave it to the stealer to sort out. Must admit most times I have been out the roof has been down and I just love it. When it is up it drives me bonkers. I am very fussy about things like that. It has rattled from new and I personally think it is unacceptable on a new car. I had it at the dealers previously and they said it was sorted. Well it isn't. Lets hope they get it right this time. I have filled the car with BP ultimate the last fill up but to be honest I haven't used it up yet. Thanks for your replies in the meantime. Happy new Year.

Reading around the forum I've found some mention of the possibility of some loose trim (plastic).

Also, very recently, folks have been talking about their soft top rubbing on the roll bars. Could this be your rattle?

Mine has an annoying rattle too. And is also a 2007 roadster (3.0i). I brought it to the dealer 2x already, but because it was early in the morning and below freezing when I had it in, I guess the cold stopped it from replicating, but about an hour after leaving the dealership, it started again. Right behind my left ear, with the top up. seems to be coming from the rubber piece that is between the interior trim and the base of the roof when it is closed. When I press firmly on it, the rattle goes away. Other wise it is constant.. Any idea what it is?

If you look at this page:

The part that I press on to make the rattle go away is #14 (just on the driver's side though).

Any ideas?

Had the car at the dealers and guess what.........not one rattle when I drove it up to the garage. Prior to this it drove me mad. Sods law I suppose. Also they could not find or hear one. I will check that out if it starts again. Thanks in the meantime, much appreciated.

That's a standard stealer saying, the Z4 is the worst built car I have ever had, rattles and shakes something awful, the flimsy bulkhead plastics are awful, try looking at the plastic surround around the rear screen, i find that is bad for rattles, it;s very flimsy. It's a pity really as apart from the build quality the car is superb

It appears to be just a rubber cover, but not sure what might be rattling underneath it that stops when I press on it. I might try removing it so I can see whan I am driving what is moving around. If it comes off easily. Al I the only person that has had this particular rattle?

this is what you will find underneath

Its a real shame as its the only thing that is driving me mad on the Z4 the only reason I can see myself getting rid.

I've had the dealers look at a few, but they just end up saying they can't hear it (must be deaf) or they just mark all the trim. I think its due to the way all the plastics link together with out padding they just rub together rattling! To solve it I would have to take the interior to bits and cover it in anti-rattle tape!

Dam American designed and built German car!
