roof out - now wont go back in

Hi all,

Man, am I feeling down!! I had the roof motor problem, followed shipkillers instructions to get the roof out, change the motor and then put the roof back in. All was going fairly well until it came to the point of putting the roof back into the car. IT just wouldn't go in. We had to be careful as the motor housing was being stressed quite a bit when attempting to fit it in, it almost snapped, and we fastened it to the roof with extra cable ties to ensure it remained stationary.

The problem we kept having is that the roof wouldnt clip into the clips on the car and we ended up with the roof not sitting properly in its housing and the sides not going down. I have had to now give up, the roof is in a limbo position in the car and I am going to have to call a mechanic tomorrow for an SOS mission - I am getting ready for the shock of the cost of getting it fixed - I am at the mercy of the mechanic now :(

So the moral, well for me at least, is know your limits!! I think the roof job was beyond me :(

What wont line up then? Have you looked at pics off anyones DIY for it? As that sometimes helps. :)

Lots of people have done it, so would not thought it could be that bad.

Where are you based?

based in leicester.

Only got the pics from shipkillers site - he doesnt really explain the putting the roof back in - I guess cos its supposed to be straightforward, but mine just wouldnt line up. It was an absolute pain to get out mind you- not as easy as the instructions make out.

We ended up taking it out, and attempting to put it back in around 5 times, but it just would not sit right :( :headbang:

The process I used was to lift the roof so it was in the medium position (although this was difficult as the roof kept wanting to close on me). We lifted the roof up and placed it on the car, with the rear of the roof in first, we attempted to put the sides in, but as I said, it wouldn't sit right. I didn't want to push too hard or force it so after the fifth attempt we gave up :(

Reading it, it was shipkillers post, and most refer to his DIY anyway. Perhaps PM him, or did you read down on the zpost forum on a few other bits people have added?

Thanks chris. Yeah I did read most of the posts before attempting to do mine. It was reading those posts that persuaded me to do mine- if so many others can do it, it can't be that difficult.

I will pm shipkiller and see what he says.

I appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Different perpective, there was a guy on here recently who took his car to a Specialist with Shipkiller's thread and he replaced it for about £200... I'm midlands too, so maybe I remember it because it was local.

I personally wouldn't touch the roof replace as it's beyond me despite the excellent threads, but obviously lots have.

Do a bit of a search for words relating to completing it - maybe "+thanks +shipkiller" or something.. you might find the same guy, who may only charge you say £140 to fit it back if you take it all over.

well with some help - the roof is back in.

Now I have another problem - wired it all up, and pressed the button for the roof to go up and it all went well. Now when I press the button for the roof to go down, I get nothing. I can disengage it manually and put it down manually, but if I press the button nothing happens.

I saw a shipkiller post about the roof sensor on another forum, but its not clear how to test it.

Thanks Andy for the advice - If I cant solve this last bit, I think I will do a search and see if I can find the guy who would do it and take it to him. He can hopefully take it apart and check everything is correct.

thanks guys.

Think somebody else had this problem and it was do to reconnecting the hydraulic hoses round the wrong way as the new motors are labelled up differently but from memory this is to be ignored.

yeah - I saw that post, and I ignored the labels on the motor when fitting it. I think if that was the case, then the motor would not have gone up when you tell it to go up, mine goes up fine, just doesn't come back down...

Yes I know what you mean about the reverse operation but it's obviously more complicated than that. If I were you I would try and find the post where the same issue was posted as the solution was also posted.
