Roof motor; oh dear

Just put roof down and noticed it was a bit slow...subsequent attempts got slower and slower until it would barely get itself going. Windows etc all do usual thing and there is clearly power getting to it. Shall I get me spanners? :driving:

If anyone has some good news and an easy fix, please let me know!

If it is a pre-facelift then it is likely the usual problem. Water gets in the motor, degrades and needs replacing. I managed to get it on warranty but is otherwise about £2,000 I think....sorry!

Worth checking this out, you might be lucky,

If not if you search the forum there are lots of threads on costs etc and shipkiller's excellent roof motor 'how to' guide. Fingers crossed :|

Sorry...sounds exactly like the problem I had. Not an easy fix but I tackled it a couple of weekends ago and the roof has worked perfectly since.

Note: You may not actually need a new motor. It'll look a mess when you take it out but that's just the casing. The actual motor should be fine. I just cleaned mine up, dried it out, and put it in again.

motor cost is £280 from BMW with a further £50 if you need the housing with the sound proofing in, There are companies that will do it for about £160 labour.

I did mine myself, I thought it was pretty straightforward.

Thanks for replies everybody, my depression has now gone somewhat. I'm preparing to do it myself when the weather improves; I'm planning on doing the motor and casing and am studying Shipkillers excellent write up. :D

It will cost you more for 2 tyres than this repair, yet people think its major.... :D :D

Most likely due to dealer responses with the usual hiss and ahhh, that will set you back £3k or so, better trade this car in now and we will give you a fiver for it :)

Two things I noticed with shipkillers guide is that there ARE connectors that can be mixed up, as some WILL fit each other.... and this blows the fuse...(not exactly sure how I found that out :headbang: ) so take note of them, or number the connector halves with a permanent marker before they are separated, and the other thing is that the new motor can have the hydraulic connections marked a different way round to the old one. If you swap the hoses to match the numbering, it will work the wrong way til it reaches its limits and then won't go back. You will end up taking the roof out again. You must swap hose positions like for like, and just ignore any stamped numbering on the pumps.
:D

I don't agree that it's anywhere near £2,000. Are we trying to get the Op to jump off a cliff ?!

I got loads of quotes for my roof motor replacing. Obviously the dealer was worst and would have worked out at about £1,100. But I found an independant who has done the job for £608.

I wouldn't have attempted the fix myself but thats mainly becuase I have no time, nowhere to do it, no tools, no inclination, and no idea what I would do if I got the roof off and couldn't get it back on.

That makes 2k seem reasonable

That is his standard response to his boss to all requests ... copy / paste job

A "friend" told you that - right? :D

A 'friend' told me about the connectors, bloody stupid sod he is.....

But I was one step ahead with the hoses, as I had read that somewhere on here, so thankfully I didnt make that mistake as well.
(errm, or the other one,.... cos that was a friend who did that....) :headbang:
