Roof motor cost reimbursed

Hi folks,
I just wanted to let you know of my recent experience having my roof motor replaced.
I have my Z4 under BMW comprehensive insured warranty and when my roof motor failed back in November last year I took it to a BMW dealership.
The familiar scenario of not being able to diagnose the problem without removing the roof raised its ugly head and with needing the car I decided to go ahead. Water damage was indeed diagnosed and I asked for the dealership to put in for a warranty claim or a goodwill gesture and that was flatly refused by the warranty manager as "BMW don't pay out for water damage" and was subsequently charged £842 to replace the motor, housing and wire loom.
I decided to bypass the dealership completely and with the help of Which Legal Services, approached BMW Insured Warranty directly. BMW Insured Warranty refused accept the claim.
I wrote back to BMW Insured Warranty rejecting their reasons for refusing the claim and sent a copy with a covering letter to BMW Customer Services.
BMW Customer Services contacted me a week or so later kindly agreeing to reimburse me in full as a goodwill gesture and although it took a further two weeks to get the money from the dealership I'm pleased to say this restores my faith in the company and will ensure that I remain a BMW customer in the future.

I don't want to identify the dealership as I feel this situation doesn't reflect the normal quality of service I receive and I'm generally pleased with them. The quality of service and the prices are better than other dealerships I've used in the past and I intend using them in the future.

A big thanks to the forum members and Which Legal Services (no I don't work for them) for helping resolve this in a positive way.

As a side note, as part of my warranty I have the assistance package and I've had BMW Assistance out on three separate occasions now, the last visit to replace a failed coil pack and I have had nothing but excellent service from them.

Warranty companies are amazing aren't they. I was also told that my recent claim for rear lamp cluster failure was due to water ingress and they would not pay. The failure was nothing to do with water, the lamp cracked due to stress in the design (widely known for e89) yet they wouldn't sort it. Ridiculous. Like you, it had to go to BMW before I got a goodwill on it instead.

I'm thinking very carefully about whether I renew my warranty. They'd probably tell me a £4000 DCT gearbox failure (which hasn't happened and please don't let me have hexed my car now) was due to wear and tear, same for turbos, same for engine etc etc... they really can wriggle out of it if they want. If they're bothered about water ingress or wear and tear, well crikey that must be the entire car surely?

Anyhow, I'm glad at least you got a fairly positive result!

Thanks Maniac, glad you got yours sorted eventually.
Yeah it shouldn't be this difficult to get a positive resolution should it, I think I'll carry on with my warranty as it has easily paid for itself and it was pivotal in BMW Customer Services paying out. I was surprised that they agreed with me that it was pointless having a warranty that doesn't insulate the policy holder from unexpected expense.
Also the BMW Assistance is exceptional in my experience.

Cheers
Dave

That is absolutely crackers! You want to ask for a list of the people who've bought into it at that price and then pop round to their house and sell them time shares, chocolate teapots...whatever you like really. You can bet they'd buy it.
