Roof failure

Good morning,

I'm new to the forum, here for some advice on the failure of my roof motor. The other day I lowered the roof and couldn't get it to go back up, lots of whirring and the red lights on the buttons were working. After giving it a breather, it did finally raise, albeit very slowly. I'm now obviously very reluctant to use the roof and am accepting of the knowledge that the motor is on the way out.

I know this is a problem area (my car is a 2006) as the car is now 13 years old and the motor is probably sat in a plastic container of water! I understand there are several options here. Complete motor replacement with possible relocation to the boot and possible repair and relocation. I have been quoted close to £1000 by my local BMW specialist who didn't seem interested or even suggest repair - just replace with a new motor.

What has been everyone else's experience of this? Can anyone recommend a good specialist who can give honest advice on repair/replacement? I'm based in the Midlands near Rugby J18 of the M1. I don't mind travelling a fair distance to save several hundreds of pounds especially if the job can be done in less than a day.

Many thanks for your help in advance!

I had exactly the same problem Bowser134 on here recently did a cracking job of replacing and relocating the motor on my Z4

marcus, roof motor issues are very common on these cars, and as yours is trying to work then it’s not a boot microswitch problem.

There’s a few roof fixers on here, my guess is that Number 5 is nearest to you, and like Bowser, knows how to sort these motor problems. Whoever you choose will sort it, and a lot easier that you might think.

Hopefully one of them will be along shortly.

Similar roof failure for me, windows descend, roof releases but no longer retracts, new to me '03 plate 2.5i. Looking to revive/relocate the motor, I'm in mid Surrey so would be keen to link up with Bowser134 please.

Kind of crazy, Bowser134 has contacted me - I would like to find out more but seemingly cos I'm a complete newbie I cant reply via PM

Make another couple of posts and you'll be fine - post 'OK' thanks to me. Then a pic of your Zed and it should be job done - I think its 3 or 5 posts to PM and if I'm wrong someone will be along to tell you
