Roof drains

Hi all,

I have searched and have found lots of threads about this topic. But I still don't understand where they are. I wanted to check mine, so was looking from the top (was going to put a little water down to see if it drains out).

Where exactly are the holes when looking from the top of the car? Should the roof be up or down? As I have said I have had a fish around and can't see them. I have seen lots of pictures on here of the hole themselves and these pictures alway look really exposed.

Sorry for the idiot posy

Rich

Hey Rich,

Cleared mine at the weekend. 10min job. Jack up the rear, take the wheel off, take off the cover in the wheel arch. Put your head in the arch, and you'll see the grommet over the drain (the bit that blocks). I put a flexi brush up there and pulled out small amount of dust/grit about the size of a 2 large peas.

Repeat the other side.

I haven't been able to see the drains with the roof on.

Has anyone actually found water in there? Did you hear it sloshing around?

you can see it without taking the wheel arch off. its about 15cm in front of the wheel arch. get under the car and look up (might be a plate in the way slightly) and you will see 3 bolts and in one corner will be the plug. have a feel around as its soft rubber so you will definatly know when you feel it

Top drain, presuming it's a right hand drive car, sat in the drivers seat it's over your right hand shoulder sort of above the petrol cap. I test my drains twice yearly by pouring water down between the roof (roof up) and the seal and look for it to drain from the sill also about level with the fuel cap, but under the car. Takes about a pint for it to start dripping. Try not to spill down the outside of the car so that the drips are obvious.

Repeat on the other side, although on that side the water tends to run along the sill and drip at the front. Also needs about a pint before dripping.

Checking the bottom holes are clear, right hand side, easier with the rear wheel off, the three nuts on front on rear arch need removing and one under the sill, remove panel and then feel under the sill, pull rubber grommet and clean. Repeat on other side.

So today I poured water along the sill with the roof up. Passengers side the water came straight out jut infront the heel arch, which I presume is correct.

In the drivers side I did the same and the water seemed to just run off te paintwork. Was really hard to get it to stay there and when it did not a lot of dripping that I could see. I put my hand inside the car and could feel the water right behind where my shoulder would be, is this correct/normal?

I put the roof down and pulled a small bit f rubber back ( by the window) could see a small hole directly below (I guess this is the one)
Is it okay to just pour water in it with te roof down?

yea the hole is about 4-5 mm in diameter .if you take the plastic plates off its a rubber bung about 25mm across . :D

I couldn't access it easily though, every picture I have seen on here of the hole from above seems easily accessible where as I can only just see it

if someone has the time mayby a little how to and a couple of photos as this is a reoccurring theme

Passenger side draining quickly is good news as that's where the motor is.

Drivers side not draining, or not draining quickly is likely to be a blockage. I'd check the bottom drain first. Really is very easy to do and will take 15 mins in total including removing the wheel.

This describes the bottom drain, NOT the top drain hole.

The pictures clearly showing the top drains are usually taken during the roof motor replacement process thus making it look easily accessible. With the roof in situ the top drains aren't easily accessible.

The water on drivers side doesn't appear to soak down, just runs off the door sil. When i put the roof down and look closely in the area where the drain hole is, their is no water remaining.

Where is best to jack the car up? I was looking at it this morning, i can see the rubber shoe on the door sill, but don't have anything to put in it before jacking it up.

I just stick the cup on my trolley jack over the rubber shoe and up she goes.

Try pouring the water whilst gently pushing the roof in a little.

Had wheel off etc now and found the drain. Put water down the roof sill, still found it wasn't dropping down the shoot, but more running striaight off. But kept looking at the bottom of the drain.
It appears it does drain, and was dripping. I think the reason I didn't see it before was because it drips on a little shelf, therefor wasn't hitting the floor

As im a nice guy ill repost what i said ages ago, I might do a video how too tomorrow, I'm going to do a video how to remove soft top next weekend...

Jack up wheel (you can take off the wheel if you dont have monkey hands)

take off the front arch cover, there are 3/4 screws i think, some under the car. (you DO NOT need to take off the whole lot, just the 4 screws, if its a rivet dont touch it)

Put you hand in and unscrew the plug, its black and squidgey.. you can see it with the plug removed here. that hole.

Shove an 8mm plastic tube up the hole, squirt water and suck etc, attach hoover etc..

You can also reach the drains by putting the hood up, and sitting in the seat looking over your outside shoulder, you can see the top of the drain there.

Thanks for the pictures, I had seen your post earlier when I searched.

Managed to find the tube, couldn't untwist the rubber commit though. Now I know where it is I can actually reach it is I think I can infect reach it with the car on te ground.

I found the water was draining but was staying on the plastic ledge
