Mine didn't so I installed Smarttop, well worth it in my opinion

Mine did it is a feature on all e89 - press and hold the unlock button for 3 or 4 seconds

the BMW manual said:
When you are close to the vehicle, the remote control for Comfort Access can be used to open the retractable hardtop.

I don't have Comfort Access. Waiting for "your battery must have been low"

The roof UP from the key fob is just as important- if the car is outside and it starts to rain you look like a real chump running out to the car !

You don’t need to ask how I know!

Agreed that is why I installed smarttopjust after I bought the car, however, I could drop the roof off the key without smart top installed.

Press the unlock continuously on the key fob and the roof should drop on the E89, the only fobs that need batteries are cars with the comfort access option (keyless entry). My E89 wouldn't drop the roof from the key fob (low car battery may have an effect), but was able to reprogram it using Carly (thanks Peter) and its been fine ever since.

Cheers. Tried it last night when stopped raining, the roof went down via remote, but wouldn’t close via remote.

May be car battery so put on charge today to see if that works. If not, will try to get garage to measure voltage.

Lesson learned of the RTFM, my side.

Well done..... bmw only designed it to go down and not up (safety feature or something) if you want it to go up via the fob then you need the added smartbox box of tricks or the car was fitted at the factory with optional comfort access

Well worth the money - just look for a used one on Ebay or here - 20 mins to install and provides a load of additional features such as roof closing off the key / one touch off internal buttons / open - close on the move / wing mirror retract when locking

No comfort access, have that on my F82. Will do, is this the SmartTop mod?

 Will have a butchers on eBay or SmartTop site,

How easy is the installation, does it need a technician?

Fairly easy - there is a thread here installation, anybody competent with a screwdriver can install one, 20 to 30 mins with ease. :D

£350 new but can be had for £200 used - I had mine for less but was lucky.

Many thanks. Think will give this a go. May ask local Indy if he can do it, competent + screwdriver does not = me.

The horrors of getting a car thief jammed in your windows. That would be the least of his concerns

Just to clarify.. you cannot lower or raise the top on E89 hardtops convertibles made for the USA, using the keyfob. You need Smarttop module or the comfort access option. For some reason you can lower the top on E89's manufactured for GB cars.

I know, but many members here are from the USA and constantly wondering why they can't use the keyfob.
