Roof down with key fob

Hey all

Newbie here, just bought my first Zed and my first convertible.

It doesn’t have the ability to put the roof down from the remote. Any recommendations of who could do this?

Based North Hants.

Cheers.

Welcome Dazza.

My Z4 came with a SmartTOP purchased by Argyll_Andy, which allows you to do exactly this plus a few other handy features. Really simple to setup and use.

Hi Dazza, welcome to the forum.

if it is an e89 then it should lower with the fob - hold the button down for a few seconds, it does not retract with the fob though

Not certain on an e85

Now, if there was a photo of the Zed, it might help.
Did anyone mention photos

E85 should go down when holding unlock but doesnt go up on Lock - dont know why
Or Put key in door and unlock - hold - roof goes down.

My 2.5 would go down with unlock and then three unlock presses of the key
Up with lock and 3 lock presses - never found the smart roof box though.

Definitely one of the best mods IMO. The one touch up/down makes it worth it on its own.

OP, not the cheapest but hold their money 2nd hand if you decide to remove and sell on if you change the car

I have one and they are great - just for the one touch retract and open / close on the move - they will come up second hand occasionally

Hi and welcome to the forum Dazza4
Has anyone mentioned photos?
Guessing it’s an e89 you have, if so it should lower the roof from the remote, if it doesn’t then it’s probably the battery voltage that is low, first thing to do is check its age, if it’s over 5 years old I’d be looking at changing it (the date will be stamped on the negative terminal), a defective battery can cause all sorts of problems so get it checked ASAP.

Welcome to the forum.

Having only owned Coupes I know nothing about getting the roof down with the key or not, but did anyone mention photos yet?

Cheers.

It’s a 2012 E89, no photos yet. Having had many BMWs, I haven’t bothered to read the manual and assumed (may be incorrectly) that it wasn’t standard. Will check it out once the ark and rain have gone.

Sound advice it’s an E89, but not tried with fob. Will check out battery. Cheers

Have you checked the battery in the remote? If you have a second key, check to see if that one works.

Don’t bother trying to circumvent the systems it won’t work - just keep your eyes pealed for a Smarttop module. If you buy used, you’ll sell for the same money if/when you sell it on.
Expensive, but worth it

Press the unlock continuously on the key fob and the roof should drop on the E89, the only fobs that need batteries are cars with the comfort access option (keyless entry). My E89 wouldn't drop the roof from the key fob (low car battery may have an effect), but was able to reprogram it using Carly (thanks Peter) and its been fine ever since.
