Roof Down Button Flashing

Noticed the other day that when I have the roof down the roof down button flashes with a red light.

Just wanted to make sure this is normal, do BMW feel the need to remind you its down like you didnt notice? :D

not normal, usually means it hasnt finished dropping the roof - try holding the down button for a little bit longer - until the windows come back up?

thats not normal...

It should stop flashing - are you hearing the roof 'clunk' when it locks it in the down position?

a post was on here with the same problem the other day, to which i replied.

it often happens because you havent had the roof open over winter or for a long period of time. it happened to me when i started putting the roof down again.

the problem is that the fabric 'forgets' how it fold down and goes down all untidy.

1. lower the roof half way
2. go to the back of the car and smooth out the fabric so it goes in neater, you will see what i mean
3. jump back in the car and lower the roof all the way down
4.check the roof is in the locking catch between the headrests, if it is only slightly raised just push the roof down.

you may need to do this a couple of times so that the fabric gets used to going down like that but it should solve your problem. if not it may be a bigger issue.

you could also check the knobs in the boot for the roof tray are fully in the correct position.

hope this helps!

Ill check its locking in place, its under warranty so will just take it back to the dealer if it isnt.

Cheers

its no big issue if it doesnt go all the way into the lock, its just the way the fabric goes down. im taking 1-2cm out of the lock here

i did as i said above and the light hasnt come on anymore.

to be fair every 1 in 10 lowerings of the roof on mine failed to lock it in place, I just gently leant on it and it locked place

Me to just reach round and a gentle tap sorts that prob.

BMW issued a 'repair/fix it bulletin' for this problem. Ask at the dealers and they should be able to give you a print out from the TIS.

My red light comes on 1 in every 4 times i drop the roof, plus the windows stay half down even when there is no red light on, the roof drops and raises quickly and locks down, should the windows raise up when the roof is put the down/up cycle is complete ? The car wasn't used for 8 months before i bought it, but has a new battery.

Your windows should open half way when opening the roof and close at the end and the same when closing your roof.

They open half way but don't go back up automatically, do i need to reset the windows ?

If this doesn't work, it will be the roof latch not locking properly when down. A gentle push down in the centre of the lowered hood, just behind the seats, whilst holding the hood down button, should lock it in place and see the windows come up. It's important to make sure the roof is always locked down as, at high speed, the wind can get under the front of it and lift it up. As has been stated earlier it is often caused by infrequent use of the top down, such as over the winter period. The hood just doesn't fold quite as tightly as it should when it's finally lowered. Often, cycling the up down sequence 5 or 6 times cures the problem and the soft top locks down correctly.

The reset has worked for the windows, as for the red light i think you're right, i just need to get the roof down often.

I've had my 11 year old zed from new and always had this problem. I went to 2 BMW garages when new to be told it was a known problem, but that there was no known solution. One said it was a sensor issue....
I've lived with it ever since, with no issues (windows automatically come back up etc)

Disagree!! :poke: The windows should still come back up even though the roof doesn't lock down in the open position. Many people including myself (even though my roof isn't working at the mo) suffer from the roof not clicking shut due to how the roof folds when lowering and the wind will NOT get underneath and start lifting it. They omitted the locking mechanism on the facelift model because of this.
