Roof down... and sun! Cap or no cap?

First long drive in my new-to-me Roadster last Sunday. 5 hours with the roof down. Not had a soft top for over 20 years and forgot you need to wear sunscreen or a hat if there's any sunshine. Especially when you don't have as much hair as you used to..

I'm far too old to get away with wearing a cap as a style statement but that's better than getting sunburnt on every road trip!

So, fellow Roadster owners, are you a capper or non-capper?

I have a full head of hair, so no cap for me! I love feeling the wind in my hair. However, I will slather on sunscreen if I'm going to be going top down for 5 hours.

Never too old to stop your head burning!
Cap for me.
In fact with very short hair and not a lot of it, without a cap the wind makes my head feel like it has pins and needles.

As I apparently have a bald patch  my wife tells me I need to wear a cap when the sun is out, I also wear it when it is below 5c as my ears get cold. However it's nice for trips in the spring and autumn without the hat as it is nice to feel the wind in my hair. Does that make me sound like a hairdresser? :poke:

I have a considerable amount of hair, so I tie it up and then thread it through a cap to hold everything in place. Otherwise I get whipped in the face as I'm driving along, which is less than ideal. :D

I am actually seriously thinking of getting a 'flat cap', as a) I'm getting a bit old for baseball caps and b) the wind can catch the 'peak' and pull them off my hairless bonce anyway!

I still wear baseball caps when fishing, though, as the peaks are long so helps with shade.

If I'm driving into the sun, then it's a hat and if the sun is behind me then I don't.

I keep two baseball caps in the car, one for me and one for a passenger. For me, it's to shade my eyes for driving with the top down (the sun visors on the Z do not flip up like Miata ones do). For the passenger (usually my wife) it's for hair control in the wind. I also have a hair clip and scarf for similar duty. I want driving with the top down to be a treat, not a punishment.

I’ve got some sun damage to my skin so reluctantly have to wear a cap. Would much refer to let the wind blow through what is left of my hair. :D :D

This sounds like a silly question, but do baseball caps stay on when driving with the roof down? I have caps I don't really want to have flying off into the scenery at speed... but equally, don't want to burn.

I might tether a cap to the roll hoops or something, I don't trust it'll stay on!

Under about 50mph yes, over that not in my experience.

Hence why I think a 'flat cap' would be better; they fit better and don't have such a large peak to catch the wind.

I keep a baseball cap in the car and usually wear it, sometimes it's for temperature control, sometimes it's for keeping the sun off. Recently it's been to block the sun too, as I've misplaced my sunglasses somewhere.

I've not had it fly off, even making quite some progress. It's snug on my head, but not excessively tight.

Seems a bit dangerous taking a hat on and off every time you turn, or go around a bend! :poke:

That's what I figure... if the roof is down, it likely means its a nice warm day and I'm out for a jolly, which means exceeding 50mph is very likely...

Sorry to dampen the mood but on a serious note would have to recommend some kind of head protection plus sun cream...

Friend of ours, many years driving a SAAB convertible, no sun protection, later on in life developed skin cancer of the ears, which began to spread and the cause was attributed to sun exposure/convertible/no sun protection combination.

He is ok but needed treatment and surgery etc.

I generally wear a cap, to keep the sun out of my eyes.

In my experience, if it fits properly it won't blow off, even when driving 'enthusiastically'.

I’m short so my head is well below the roof line, so as long as the windows are up all is well even at 70mph. If you are over 6 foot I would think you would need a chin strap
