Roll bar in black

hello Does anyone know if we can swap the silver roll bars with the black one? If not can we respray it in black? thanks

Yes and Yes, you can replace with black ///M rollbars or paint, beware if you remove the covers you will have to replace them as the tabs will snap off, but some people have sprayed whilst in place.

They are swappable. Like srhutch said, you will likely break a few of the plastic tabs which connect the two halves together while removing the old covers. The new covers should snap together easily.

Your other option is to spray paint them black. I would suggest painting them while on the car to prevent breaking the plastic tabs. Get some of the large plastic tarp sheets that painters use and mask off the entire area (at least 3 or 4 feet surrounding). Lightly sand the plastic covers with 800-1000 grit sandpaper, prime, then spray with flat black paint.

I sprayed mine black over 2 years ago, and since then have had no problems with chipping or fading. Looks much better in black IMO. Here was the end result:

Funny someone should mention this - it's on my list of things to do to the Z4 in the better weather!

you've got to get the right paint with the correct finish otherwise it'll look pooh.

Thanks for the replies. Mister Roger, which paint and prime did you use? Where can I buy the tarp sheets to cover the surrounding area? thanks

literally anywhere. B&Q, Homebase, Screw-fix, e-bay, even somewhere like Argos probably. You'd just need a plastic finish as opposed to a cloth dust sheet to prevent the risk of paint seeping.

Or you could wrap them? I'm going to do mine either in gloss black or CF.

Hi, its a good idea to wrap them. I know someone who can do that, I will check if its possible. cheers

Cool...I don't see why there should be a problem? I think it would be quite easy... not too sure with the covers already on though? anyone tried it?

I really like the black roll bars - never even thought about it before!

Ideally i would like to source some black extended leather ones - or i may just wrap it in leather. If you have the carbon leather dash maybe some carbon fabric!.

I just used some generic primer and flat black spray paint from the hardware store. The plastic painters tarps I purchased there as well. These tarps come in huge sheets intended to cover carpets and are relativly inexpensive.

If you do decide to spray them, make sure you can leave the top down for at least a day to dry. When the top is up, the interior lining slightly presses against the roll bars. If the paint is still tacky at all, you will leave canvas imprints on your freshly painted roll bars. :(
And be sure to spray in thin, light coats. Take your time around the inside areas. The last thing you want is paint runs along the sides.

I think wrapping them in vinyl could work, but would pose a bit of a challenge around the contoured areas of the roll bars. You would likely need to remove the covers completely in order to get a proper stretch and wrap, but then you risk breaking the plastic tabs again.

This a job i have wanted to do for a while but BMW cannot find a part number for the M covers :(

May have to buy a new set and spray them before fitting.

Halfords Bumper Black paint is great for these jobs leaves a nice satin black OEM look on interior plastics.

Great work

I applaud your effort to find the existing topic and reviving the thread, instead of starting another. For that, I salute you :hattip:
