I almost decided not to bother replacing them with the car only on 40000 miles but luckily I changed my mind must admit I am pretty shocked at the state of some of them

I feel you, but they are not like they were failing tomorrow, you could get another 10k out of them. I think what kills them is short stints or low engine rpm with high loads. Like accelerating from low rpms. I do this a lot which stresses me out as I know I need to change them sooner rather than later, but at the same time I drive her very little.

Will start collecting parts to do the job sometime in the next 18 months or so.
