Roadster to Coupe - thoughts?

Hi,
anyone swapped from Roadster to Coupe? If so what are your thoughts. Thinking of a road trip around Europe in the summer and wonder about the security of a roadster, as well as the predominantly roof up weather in UK and summer Europe.
Any thoughts appreciated - thanks

I recently made the move. The roadster is fun, and I loved the roof down driving.

The coupe is a stunner though, and I've not really missed the roof down action yet.

Ideally I'd have both.

That might be due to you owning it less than a month and it's been pee'ing down this far.....although today is lovely but windy.

Anyways to be honest as nice as it is to take the roof off, sometimes the suns just at a level where you wish you had the roof back up. The coupe maybe more practical space wise for traveling baring in mind if you have a full boot, the roof won't be coming off.

If we do get some good weather shortly you may miss it. Now I've had convertibles I do find it hard not to have one but then I'm mental and have the roof down whenever it's not raining

You had both! :poke: :)

I owned the roadster 3.0si and then bought a coupe 3.0si with the idea of keeping them both. However in the 3 months of dual ownership I only picked the keys to the roadster once, and that was because I wanted to charge its battery. Thats why I sold my roadster. ..

The coupe's looks did it for me. Both E85 and E86 look great, I just love the clam shell boot of the coupe. Plus the boot is huge for a 2 seater.

The chassis of the E85 is supposed to be very stiff, so doubt you 'd notice any difference between them (with like for like engines) unless on a track, despite the missing roof on the E85.

In summary the looks of the coupe won it for me. I've never had a convertible, so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing yet!

I swapped from 2003 2.5i roadster to 2007 M Coupe. Definitely glad I went tin top, the looks are the swinging factor for me. The coupe to my eyes is a million times more beautiful!

Also no worries about the roof motor going (which did happen on my roadster fwiw)

I don't think I will miss the top down motoring as nice as it was, however given the weather so far that is hard to say. Not sure I will say the same come a warm summer evening hoon!

Didn't have both at same time ;)

Ideally I'd have the roadster for hot days and coupe for the looks. But the rarity and looks of the coupe are what sold it for me

That's why I'm going E89...best of both.

I have had a couple of convertibles (slk and e89) and don't really get them even though I brought them, Its so hard to find the right conditions, Its either so hot you need your aircon on and if you have the roof off you burn your head or its cold or wet, That's probably why I had the folding tin tops and not the rag roofs,

IMO your either a Roadster or Coupe person...
If you were truly a Roadster person you would not have any interest in a Coupe.
Therefore go for the Coupe... :driving:

Better get some posts on here from the Roadster side of the Forum. . .

For me - I'd drive a model T with the roof off - it's the open aspect of the motoring that makes the difference.

Could it be related to motorcycling - doesn't matter about the time of year or weather/temp I have the roof down - I've got another car for long boring journeys couped up (good phrase that - maybe it should be the exclusive couped up club?) in a tin box.

Love the looks of the coupe though - maybe the E89 does have the best of both worlds?

:driving:

I assume we are talking Z4 only here as my Fav Z3 was the M Coupe, everyone thinks I'm mad for that and the E86 was my fav from the last gen. My mate looked at a coupe and bought a 3.0si roadster instead which I didn't think was such a great choice. I always swoon for a Z Coupe. Oh and no issues with roof leaks, holes, moss etc in a tin top

Correct! Going from a rag top vert to a tin top vert is different and you notice it when you sit in it. Has more a coupe feeling but you can whip the roof off if your feeling brave. But this is about E85 vs E86 and I'm still going with E86
