Roadster purchase: milky oil cap, traction and brake warning lights, sticky roof

Hello again - some development on the warning lights that the garage was going to fix. Apparently it's the [magnetic] steering [column] angle sensor, and they don't fancy trying to fix/replace that. They've knocked £250 off if I still take it. Does anyone know if it's a big job to fix?

It’s a sod to replace as its column out

If it’s in need of fixing (the bushes in the sensor wear) or calibration it’s doable with a little skills and tools

It’s a bit of a gamble

If it were me I’d ask for 500 off knowing I could fix in either situation. However it will cost a lot more if you are going to give it to someone to fix…

From reading this thread, and on the face of it, I would say this one is a MUCH better proposition than the one the OP posted about. Even if it a bit more money now, it won't be by the time you've sorted the other one.

Don't understand why anyone would entertain buying a car with multiple known issues (and possibly unknown ones) from a dealer. It will never be cheap enough.

True that it's a gamble, and I would say the other black Z4 isn't without issues that have been listed, but likely cheaper to sort out. My main sway against that one is the colour!

One query I don't fully trust the garage on is whether the stability systems still function despite the light - does anyone know about that?

The DSC won't operate if it is showing a fault (the round arrow in the exclamation mark). But that isn't the end of world, as it only brakes the rears wheels and wears the pads and discs down! :D

True that it's a gamble,
I was always under the impression that was why people buy from dealers....so it isn't a gamble. Obviously entirely up to you. If you are happy, go for it! On the plus side there are LOT of very, very helpful and knowledgeable people on here, should you need them.

If you buy a car from a dealer knowing that it has a fault which impacts it’s road worthiness (i.e. it would not pass an MOT with lights on the dash), you are probably relinquishing any rights you may have against the dealer under the sale of goods act and, therefore, you are no better off than buying privately and should not be paying any dealer “premium”. You are better off paying the undiscounted price and insisting on a roadworthy car.

To be fair, the only issues not listed in the advert will be sorted before any sale. It has a slight leak into the boot through the third brake light, the official BMW replacement arrives on Wednesday which will be fitted. The passenger door lock is currently not working, however I have the cast off my ankle now so should be able to fit the replacement at the weekend. After that, it just needs a service and a repair to the existing amp or replacement amp and it is good to go, both of which I'm happy to knock money off for :D

Have you got a link to the car being sold? I’m intrigued

Don’t worry I’m not planning on gazumping you!!

May just help you spot a few other things with it…

And I’d budget at least £200 for a new amp if that’s fried too

Here is a link to it! its item number 175956748709 on eBay if the link doesn't work. Yeah, they keep coming up between 150-300 on eBay and marketplace, I have just not been quick enough to get one as they sell straight away! Ideally id prefer and replace before selling as it would probably make it easier to sell too!

So is this the one with the Steering Angle Sensor problem?

Yeah that's the one!

Also regarding danhadnam's car, wasn't dissing it, just noting that both cars aren't perfect, as none are :)

So what's the plan with the steering sensor then?

I can see why you took a punt - it looks really smart. Good luck sorting those issues.

I'll sleep on the sensor issue, and see how a long drive tomorrow goes. Got breakdown cover ;)

Also will to find somewhere private/safe to test the traction/stability to see if any of it works with those lights on in the meantime.
