Road Tax up again!

What are you talking about? To make it fair, it should be put on fuel!
I do 5000 miles a year and have to pay 500 road tax. Yet people in their low emissions cars could be doing 4 times the mileage but only paying 30 quid. How is that fair?
If it was on fuel, it would be proportional to how much co2 you are actually putting out due to the fuel you are burning, so directly affected by the mileage you do and how efficient your car is. Absolutely fair to everyone.

You've missed the whole point. It is a tax on car ownership not car use. Road Tax was abolished in 1937 and VED is based on emissions and rightly so. I wouldn't want to pay £500 a year so I choose not drive a car in the top band. I pay £225 a year to do a similar mileage to your model yet your car throws out far more emissions than mine.

You were aware of the VED banding when you brought your car so why bleat about the amount of annual VED.

As I said before there's no way the Government will change it.

can't lie this is now... now JUST starting to get to me when the time comes around its starting to become an issue now... Not the cars fault by any means but the tiny mileage for 500 quid a year....
once I've had enough, the car will be sold, starting to think a cater ham would be much more suitable for me.
My father in law has a caterham and I loved it when I had a go in it as its about as good a driving tool that you can get. :driving: I will to struggle to imagine you without the zed though

how have I missed the point? Is it not a bit contradictory? If it was about the car, it wouldn't be based on emissions. If they are basing it on emissions, then it should go on the emissions you are actually f#$@ing emitting! !

Yes I did know how much it cost when I bought the car, but does that mean I'm happy about it? Or mean I can't complain about how the government are ripping me off with some pathetic excuse regarding emissions?

We talk about VED quite often on here and I agree it should be put on fuel too, I do 40K mikes per year in my company car at 140ish grams and 3-4K in the ///M at whatever that is ( 270 ish?) so which car puts out more emmisions over the year?

Also if the fuel price was higher to cover the VED then those who didn't want to pay so much would buy/run more fuel efficient cars, those that weren't bothered would pay the money and drive less efficient cars :driving:

That was the reason for me to sell, the new car is less than half that :D

Just taxed the Golf though, £230 which covers about 100 miles, hmm.

Remind me of the payback time in years :poke:

Only pay half the Tax and garage the Z over winter - have a cheap run around during those months were the Z's is holed up - thats my plan

this is what I've done for a good while tbh.... but it still painful however, you pick your car, you pay your money i guess :-)

i made the mistake of selling a two seater (s2000) over the winter month many years ago, then summer tips up and you wonder why you sold the car. A mistake i won't be making with the ///M - she is a keeper.

As above I SORN for 4-5 months which makes it more bearable but it costs me about 22p per mile pro rata.

If they don't tax this way they'll find it somewhere else. As I said earlier when emissions are nil hands up how many people think they will abolish VED? Based on emissions my arse. That's just the current way of justifying taking tax off you for owning a car.

Road tax does seem to influance peoples chioces even more than Fuel Tax.

When I replaced the old Mazda 323FSport Recently. I'd have happlily bough an Mk1 MPS, as the new DD. But the thought of £465 Tax, on top of the £500 for the Zed was a real turn off, so I bought a Sport instead. £265 a year.

The fact I spend £1000s a year on fuel tax doesn't influance my choices nearly as much, because is just £70.00 a time and you can always stay in an have a coco, if your feeling a bit skint.

The psychology of VED vs fuel tax is interesting. I wonder if attitudes will change when they abolish the physical disc later this year and let you pay monthly? Great ruse for the Government as there may be greater propensity to pay and they'll benefit from the 5% surcharge too!

Man you guys are getting BRUTALIZED over there. I pay about $3.50/US gallon for fuel.. about $275/year to the state of Arizona to register the car.. and about $650/year to insure it, full coverage. That's it. That fuel cost includes a healthy chunk of highway-related federal & local taxes. We have some of the finest roads in the nation here in Arizona - local freeways are paved with rubberized asphalt, for longevity and quietness. Most of the roads are as smooth as billiard tables. Beautifully maintained twisties up in the mountains in many areas. We are very fortunate.. this is a great place to be a motoring enthusiast.

It's probably the reason why we have free health care & you don't, the money's got to come from somewhere.

Free at point of entry.
I think you mean 'free at point of use'... but there's a lot of health tourism that takes your statement literally...
