Road Tax Reminder

Got my reminder through today as my ///M road tax runs out at the end of the month, it's quite a chunk as many of you know, for those who don't .........

6 months is £261.25 and 12 months is £475 .

I know this has probably been covered in the past but I do nearly 40,000 miles per year in my company Alpina for £135/yr road tax and under 4000 mpy in the ///M for £475

For me the Road Tax should be incorporated on fuel cost, I know its already taxed heavily but the more you use a vehicle the more you'd pay, that's my bah humbug out of the way

I know Adam, it's only around £10 per week whether it sits in the garage or I'm using it but it grinds a bit

Agreed. Petrol is high enough already, however it seems a much fairer system if its incorporated into fuel. That way the more you use the roads, the more you pay. And the tree huggers out there will be happy as the less fuel efficient your car the more you pay. And surely the government would save a packet as they would no longer have to administer the supply tax discs?

+1 This applies equally to toll roads. The argument that those that use the roads more should pay more is ridiculous. With the amount of fuel duty and then vat (incl vat on the fuel duty) we already pay more if we use more.

Just imagine, they could save all that bureaucracy money in Swansea with the DVLA and reinvest it in something worthwhile, like education or health. Or simply keeping the roads in good repair...

am sure no sane person could argue the roadtax system is fair :x it so obviously isn't .
the folks who choose the low tax groups tend to do the mega miles & vice versa so plainly the whole system is totally flawed .
the one & only fair way of road taxation is per mile used & if you guzzle you pay more . if not you don't simple ?

I think the current car tax system must reduce the number of uninsured or un MOT'd vehicles (even if only slightly)!

£470 per year for a 2 seater is ridiculous though

But if produces civil service jobs and the cost of the tax covers all the admin costs, a contribution to police (catching tax evaders ). etc etc
Seems crazy not to just add it to the cost of fuel.

It would add a heck of a lot - I worked it our once (back of a napkin type calculation so not entirely reliable) and I think it came to over 20p a litre.

I thought it was no longer called "road tax" as it has no bearing to road maintenance ...
