Road Tax Reminder

Got my reminder through today as my ///M road tax runs out at the end of the month, it's quite a chunk as many of you know, for those who don't .........

6 months is £261.25 and 12 months is £475 .

Us poor Alpina Roadster owners have to make do with PLG tax rates and, because we're in the over 1549cc class, we have to stump up a hefty £220/yr :)

It's a tax or licence, or whatever else they want to call it, on car OWNERSHIP not USE. That's the unfair bit.

Of course it should be incorporated into the fuel duty, but that would flood the employment market with thousands of brain-dead automotons from the defunct DVLA.

I agree... the whole system is a crock of shite really!

I pay £475/year to tax my M roadster and do about 5k miles in that time at the absolute most.
I also have a 118d, which costs a whopping £30/year to tax... but I do about 20k miles a year in that.

Now someone explain the logic to me in that?!?!?! :headbang:

totally agree

why should somebody who only does 5000 miles a year in an M pay more tax than somebody who does 35000 miles in what ever company car

:soapbox: because the govenment is in thrall to a bunch of car-hating, lycra-clad, green loonies who, if they do happen to have a car ("for emergencies only, luvvie"), drive around in something made out of knitted wheatabix packets and think that only the morally-bankrupt and/or the rich would drive anything other than a fart-powered eco-box, so the tax is another way to "soak the rich" and punish any others who dare to disagree with their agenda

Ahhhh... I feel better now...

Conversely, when I was doing 25k per year, I was well chuffed in my 3 series paying £165 per year road tax.

Swings and roundabouts I guess, can't please everyone. One life's little treats for having a nice toy :headbang:

I know this has probably been covered in the past but I do nearly 40,000 miles per year in my company Alpina for £135/yr road tax and under 4000 mpy in the ///M for £475 :o

For me the Road Tax should be incorporated on fuel cost, I know its already taxed heavily but the more you use a vehicle the more you'd pay, that's my bah humbug out of the way :D

The problem with incorporating it into fuel, as they have been trying to do here in Ireland, is you end up penalising people who live in rural areas. It's not fair to allow the guy who lives 5 miles away from the office to pay little car tax and penalise the guy who lives 15 miles out of town, this encourages people to move into cities which would be a disaster for the economy. Also, count yourself lucky you pay that amount in the uk, everywhere else is double. Here in Ireland I would need to shell out €1500 euro a year for a 3.0. You pay Toyota Yaris tax for your ///M as far as here is concerned. Insurance is same. It's essentially a fun tax, the better the car the more you pay. It's s**t. The fairest way, is the way it is now. I can't think of any other way, a flat rate? E.g. Tv licence. Everyone pays the same regardless of what it is, although then, you will have so many 4.2 v8's around it would just be unbearable.
