Road Rash / Stone Chips

Took the z4c out today for a good clean, looks fantastic but now can see that the front of the car has many tiny stone chips, whats the most effective way of blending/filling/colouring without a respray job.

Been told chipsaway will come to your house take a look and quote but tempted to just do it myself.

I've had chips a way around for a quote twice. each time the guy told me he couldn't do the job on my //M bonnet because of the crease lines, on metallic paint. So It will be a front end respray when I finally get bored of the stone chips.

Every job is different though, so get a quote. :)

I’d wait for it to get worse and get the bumper spray when you think it looks too bad to leave.

You could try a repair kit but it’s easy to make it look worse and you’d probably still see them when you get right up close.

Only one way to sort it,paint it..

Usually front bumper,bonnet....Sometimes the leading edge of wings, then this has to be blended into the doors, especially on something black..

Agreed , anything else is pi55ing in the wind , allow £300 / £500 depending where you go OP & my personal preference is paint the bumper on the car ( if panel gaps are currently good ) but many may disagree

Personally I would polish it with a colour coded polish - will help to hide it and more importantly keep the car in original condition :D - it can't be that bad or you would have noticed it when you first saw it .

Recently whilst watching an AMMO detailing video (sad I know...) he was filling stone chips on an old 911 in a museum using this fantastic paint pen. It was a handle with a tiny funnel and fine tube that allowed single drops of paint to be delivered onto the surface. I immediately bought one and will use it when the time comes.

So as a background, I have found filling the chip well is often the best way to get back to good condition. If you want to go further you can overfill, sand back and polish off. It will then basically disappear.

Hi there Z4C_er,

I’ve done the same and ordered the Loew-Cornell pen :) going to order the Chipex kit too and give it a go myself

The lower section of the front bumper will be repainted without removing the bumper from the car.

Will keep you guys posted on the results of the DIY job, wish me luck!

I have used the chipex kits

They do make things look better, but don't be under any illusion that it's a total repair..

It maybe better on some cars, but the paint on a Z4 "rashes"... shows up on black more than most, but my grey E89 was also quite bad..
If you take your time and get the technique correct then you can get the car visually better from say 10ft away..

Depends on how nice you want the car, all the chips and rash did my head in so had them painted..

Perfection for not a lot of cash

You make a good point but i still feel like giving it a go and the personal involvement in making the car right is also very satisfying for me.

Having said that, I am quite convinced that I may end up having the front re-sprayed as I’m a bit anal

Do you know if it is possible/advisable to apply a protection film after the re-spray?

Oh yes you can have the film applied and I've seen it. When done well it's only noticeable at the very edges of the panel where the film terminates.
I'm not sure if you need to wait for the paint to de-gas these days?

Halfords kit works the same way just tap to release the paint sadly the colour match on my Silver Z was not that great.
