Retrofit DSP?

I'm going to look at a Z4MC today. I suspect it may not have the DSP option I was hoping for. These cars are few and far between enough not to necessarily let this be a showstopper. However if its possible top retro fit this day from a car being broken, it could make my purchase decision easier.

So is it possible? Is all the wiring there? Is it just a case of buying the head unit and the amp?

If it has 10 speaker stereo you'll have either:

Basic DSP - 3 presets
Carver/logic DSP. - which can be adjusted on the Nav screen. But it only comes with Nav

If the car has basic stereo, it might be cheaper and more effective going for a non-BMW aftermarket sound system.....

Thanks for that. The guy is unsure if it has it. The car has Sat Nav. So if I see Dsp settings in the menu its got it right?

And how many speakers does the standard one have?

I am now intrigued. How do you adjust DSP without Nav? Through the head unit?

I am now unsure if I have 10 speaker hi-fi or Carver :?

When I'm driving mine all I hear is a straight six... I'm not sure what is the relevance of this logic 7 and 10 speaker nonsense :poke: :D

I'd be interested in retrofit if it's possible. The stereo quality on the basic speaker setup with Nav is the only thing I'm not happy with on the car

Tapatalking...

And which one is better? :D

Wish me luck, just about to walk out the door and make my way there :driving:

Carver is better. If my understanding is correct it has individual EQs vs the 3 pre-set DSP setting on the Hifi option.

Edit - Carver has better amp and higher output in watts too

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

I have the 10 speaker, you can tell from the spec sheet from the BMW factory fitted options list..

I had the DSP in my old Z and it was a pile of poo,
sounded shite

Me too, 08 plate Z4M with no nav but DSP. Terrible system.

Did yours not have nav either?

I had a 53 plate 3.0i, no nav, with 'Hi-Fi' before (no DSP but rear subs) and that was really quite a good system.

The older cars had fibre optic systems, the newer I believe are analogue.

The amp on left is top hi/fi dsp (carver), the right is regular 10 speaker hi/fi. Base audio has no amp.
Nav changes the controls you have over the system, not the system.

You can't tell from the realoem site which is which, but my amp's part number matches the top hi/fi listing and it looks like the left one.

Thanks for posting. I'll check my amp out in the daylight. This will help. Cheers

Forgot about this, how to check what spec your car is from factory.

Follow the instructions to get a dealer style list of options fitted to your car from new. A genius on BMW Car Magazine Forum worked this out, great find !

http://www.bmw.co.uk

>Owner area >Genuine BMW Parts >Parts catalogue [read on screen instructions for log in] > Enter VIN > Click on options at the top of the page, and expand the 'Vehicle information' tab at the top for colour and trim options.

Tada !!
