Retrofit Cruise Control

Hey guys

just a general thank you to all the contributors to this thread. Using the information in this thread I successfully fitted cruise control to my 03 2.5 Z4 and as was said it took me only 20 minutes to fit ! Jackpot! Indeed the most difficult, if it can really be described as difficult, part was drilling and cutting out the steering column cowling to accept the new switch.

Meant to say I paid £79.38 for the stalk from BMW Soper in Lincoln part no.B61.31.6.940.989 arrived within 1 day of placing order.

I too have ordered a stalk for me to pop on my 3.0
I had a price from Sopers of 79.38 also but managed to get it from my local dealer for the same price, just because I can pick it up from them when I'm passing.
Mind you they told me on the phone it was £78 but when I called in to order it they said £89, I then gave them that look which said are you taking the p*ss and asked is that the best you can do ?? managed to get a 10% discount then so wasn't too bad realy.
Hope to be fitting mine on Saturday, Can't wait, I love tinkering

Well that didn't take long. Picked my stalk up today and fitted it in only 15 to 20 mins, how easy a job is that.
Took it for a spin down the road and all working fine

I did it like two weeks ago on mine. Plug and Play they would say. And it works
But I really don't understand Germans with this silly cruise control. I prefer buttons not ... extensions

Just looking into this at the moment before a trip to Wales end of April.

I've got an 07 plate and think fitting this myself is a bit beyond my capabilities.

I'm based in Surrey.. Does anyone that has fitted this to their own Z and isn't too far away fancy fitting for me? Cash your way ofcourse. Drop me a pm if you do!

Just spoken to a mate who has a 53 zed, install was plug and play. He thinks the later zeds have to have the cruise coded in?

Previous posts suggest that it doesn't need to be coded as long as it's wired correctly.. I'm happy to be corrected though!

I think your right, your year car will not have the cruise loom fitted and will need purchasing with the stalk and then I believe it needs splicing into your columns loom.

No coding required, just loom on later cars.

May 2004. Very easy to do given the cowling has an outline to cut to. I used a hacksaw blade for an approximate vertical cut and used a stanley knife to score the horizontal cut and snap off then used the stanley to trim off slivers to get the shape bang on. All doable in 20 minutes

I also have another question for brad. on your uploaded photo i see that you took the plastic cover under the wheel and you cut it in order for the cruise control switch to be installed. What i don't understand is where does the plastic part i have circled in photo3 belong to?

if it was built after Oct 2004, facelift or not, it won't have the plug

Mine is an Oct 2004 build, plug wasn't there. It was easy enough to take the cowling off for a quick check and easy to wire in the loom extension.

I just finished retrofitting cruise control to my new to me 2006 M roadster today. I ended up using a used cruise control switch I bought on E bay for $25 and a jumper cable from a computer instead of buying a wiring harness. Thank you to who ever posted a great picture of the factory harness on page 7 of this forum showing location key, pin numbers and wire colors that was very helpful! Only 3 wires to hook up power and ground from the light switch wiring (as discussed on this forum & BMW instructions) and hooking up pin 2 on the switch to the blue/black wire that was on pin 4 of plug X6002 at the DME. It took a little time to see which wire was pin 4 on connector X6002 at the computer. Note the computer needs to be lifted out of its holder to get at the X6002 plug which is the lowest large plug connected to the computer. I had to slide one of the two connectors out of the plug to see which wire was attached to pin 4. Note the BMW cruise control install instructions for N46 or N52 engines are actually the correct directions for the M roadster (I confirmed this with the factory wiring diagrams prior to starting). Also the forum suggested method for getting the wire from the computer to inside the passenger compartment did not look like it would work for the M engine (the main wire harness went deep into the engine not towards the fuse panel inside the glove box). Instead I ran the wire down below the computer and through the grommet in the firewall with a hydraulic tubing line going through it near the clutch.

Well just called my local stealer and they quoted me £86 for the part so I sent a request through some breakers hopefully I will get a used one cheaper if not will have to pay the money because I really want cruise now I know how easy it is to fit

Call Sopers in Lincoln who will give you a discount if you mention the forum and usually free postage. Breakers, if they have one, are going to look to charge over the odds for a 2nd hand untested stalk.
