Retrofit Cruise Control

Call Sopers in Lincoln who will give you a discount if you mention the forum and usually free postage. Breakers, if they have one, are going to look to charge over the odds for a 2nd hand untested stalk.

Cheers for the heads up mate :)

Just ordered from sopers £79 with postage and forum discount so slightly cheaper than my local BMW and they have it in stock so will be about the same amount of time to get to me

Fitted! Took about 15 minutes in total, most of that was in my garage cutting and includes the time spent spent fitting a new cutting disc to the dremel, easy peasy mod and well worth it especially with a 3,000 mile road trip coming up! Thanks for the great resource

Fitted mine at the weekend, about two hours work.

Removing the light switch was easy but I only just left enough cable on the plug end to get the plug to lock back into the switch after.

The route into the electrical box was surprisingly easy.

Bit nervous on finally pushing it into the main connector but hey it's in and it works a treat.

Cool cruising now.

The instructions are junk when it comes to the correct DME wiring for each version. The N52 should be add black repair cable to X60191 Pin 39:

Which actually looks like this:

Hope that helps :)

Just fitted cruise control to my car (Thanks Steve) what the hell were BMW thinking, fit everything apart from the switch ??
I got a second hand switch from ebay, cut out the cowl plugged in and away I went :D

Clearly an easy way to differentiate between models and allows extra sales.

Actually it's a real advantage on BMW that they make provision for things to be added after the factory build.

Try a Jaguar for instance and not a single thing can be fitted and cannot be coded by dealer or aftermarket.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased it's so easy to retro fit, my point is, why not just fit the switch as standard, everything else is fitted after all ??

So why not fit silver headlight inners, xenon headlights, matte grey grilles, 6 speed gearbox, etc, etc on all the models as fitted on the 3.0i because it costs them virtually no more.

Cruise control is just the same - it's an extra to differentiate by or ability to charge more at purchase.

Many thanks for the excellent detail on the retrofitting of cruise control to my 04 reg Z4. This was undertaken after a chance meeting with a very kind and helpful Mr Irfan. I suppose BMW may have offered a better price for the component I read in a 2009 the price was around £60 ... yesterday I paid £114 at Sytner Nottingham, although im very happy with what I paid one would think that it was a rather large increase for a component which is obviously still sort after for the Roadster ... but I suppose BMW are making "hay" after the enthusiasts in this forum have significantly increased awareness for the Z4 community ... Once again many thanks to all who contributed to this topic and my acquaintance Irfan. Well on to my next project of remote door locking not unlocking when initiated from the key ...

I assume these will also work on automatics???

I phoned my dealer (Malton, Yorkshire) yesterday and was also quoted £114. Wish i'd bought it two months ago when i was quoted from them £78!!!!

Seen this today from Bimmertune with free UK delivery http://www.bimmertune.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=85

Just adjust the country your from at the top of their site to show the correct currency/shipping details.

Just checked this morning & the stalk is £114 inc VAT - 8 of them available in the UK

I will do FOC postage as well

Tony
Can you supply these? Is it the kit required for the Coupe i.e Harness included?

This is just the stalk. Looking through the thread, the loom is needed on post October 2004 cars.
I can get any BMW part (work at a BMW dealership) but I won't give advice as to what parts might be needed

Tony

folks , received my stalk today and since I'm off work tomorrow i figured i will chill with a few nice cobra tonight and tackle it tomorrow . That was the plan but i started a wee bit tonight . Just wanting to firm up on the colours for tomorrow1463687374265.jpg when adding the loom . Instructions say vi/gr and br/sw . Is that violet/green and br/ ?

Didn't notice any closeup pictures but if theres one knocking about then please share .
thanks

Ok all fitted and working , many thanks for this thread . A few wee tips that may help others .
Ive a m54 2005 z4 which connects to pin27 of the 40pin dme plug . I was dreading getting the wire from the cabin to the engine bay but that turned out to be the easiest bit . I was able to pass the wire through the very rear of the tunnel , i needed someone reaching from the passenger side to grab it . From the passenger side theres a large black rubber grommet just above where the carpet finishes . Punctured a tiny hold with a nail and pushed the wire through , with it being rubber it sealed back up again air tight . No need to remove the glovebox .

Next i was into the dme looking for a 40 pin black plug . I disconnected the plugs and took picts as my eyes couldn't see the tiny numbers . Soon worked out which plug i should be connecting the wire to .

Lastly and i hope this helps . I was stumped for while when it came to putting the wire into the plug . Finally worked out that the connection blocks inside the black plug unclip and slide out . This then allows you to slip in the wire into the correct position . Took a pict that will help

Ive no lights on the dash to say cruise control is ON but everything is working grand . Is this normal though ?

I've managed to find the stalk on google: http://www.genuineautoparts.com/uk/oe-bmw/61316940989?origin=pla&gclid=CjwKEAjwkPS6BRD2ioKR7K245jASJAD1ZqHORdPTCTZdIqFMzNliB5Gxci-1I3BDnWR7lokHLM3rWBoCABTw_wcB

but I can't find the retrofit loom: 61 12 0 411 248

Can anyone help? I'm desperate to fit cruise control to my 2005 3.0i!!
