if I put on the "health and safety" hat, yes it's 100% necessary.
However, I don't actually believe there's any power to that harness, unless the keys in the ignition and switch to at least the second point... but don't quote me on it, as i've not tested that in the slightest.
The reason "I" didn't do it, was that it was cold out and disconnecting the battery would have resulted in no heated seats. :headbang:
