Respraying Cars - Skill being re-learnt

Well I grabbed a couple of hours this afternoon and went over the bumper with 1200 then 2500 wet&dry and half an hour with a couple of grades of polish with the porter cable and the results are really good. Perfect match, colour pops well and not a hint of orange peel or flaws :)

At this stage there is no sealer or wax as I want the paint to breathe for longer, but results are excellent and will be perfect in a week or so whne finished.

Before shot as the purpose is a bumper upgrade:

The graininess is low setting sunlight and iphone limitations, but do show the bumper fitted and 95% done.

You need to transfer the bumperstrips as otherwise you might do this on a weekly basis :D

Well I would except they are recessed into the old bumper and so not transferrable :headbang:

Very nice. I find using a cheap palm da speed things up massively. Especially with flatting and polishing. You'll want 3m 1500 discs and an interface pad and some 3m trizact 3000 discs. Also a box each of 180, 320 and 500 discs should pretty much sort you out for the rest. Also I use a 3m 2k mask for diy stuff. I bought a bergen palm da off ebay 36 quid delivered and it works brilliantly.

I think the palm is a good idea. Not so sure for it on such intricate thingsa as bumper where it's full of fine contours but would help on the larger areas for sure.

Leesfarm07 - I use smaller plates on all our cars. These are custom made with correct font, spacing, BS# and postcode to keep any police inspection happy.

Its definitely good for bumpers, probably 80% of it could be done with the da. The interface pad is roughly 10mm thick soft foam and makes it perfect for this sort of thing. I did a pair of headlights with it the other day starting with 500 and it worked perfectly. If it wasn't for the interface pad I would probably agree with you. Try it you won't regret it! :)

I quickly painted this the other day.

Prepped with 500 discs on the da with the interace pad and scotched in the really intricate areas. Probably took not much more than an hour overall. (No damage or anything) but came out very well :)
I will still flat and polish it when its on the car but came out well straight out of the gun (20 quid gravity fed gun off ebay lol)

Ok convinced as I love a good gadget and the one you referenced looks like it's got built in dust extraction.

Picked up the paint for the Z4 this morning so I'd better get that one prepped next

Nice finish from the gun btw :)

Bit of an update..
Having gained the required level of confidence in 2 pack paints on the 1 series :), time to do the Z4.

Z4M bumper was in great condition, but still filled few bits of damage, chips, etc., then flatted, prepped and went into primer this morning.
Flatted primer, painted in base and lacquered this afternoon and just curing overnight.

All being well it should be fitted in the morning and then wet sanded and polished in situ.
