Replacing Carver Sat Nav system with normal or aftermarket setup

I don’t use the Navi or screen at all. So I’m wondering if it easy enough to just strip the existing system and fit and aftermarket or normal business setup.

Or even just remove the amp and screen and just add my own amp, headunit and tap into the existing speakers. The amp could be located at the front-it doesn’t have to be in the boot.

I think I looked into this before but remember I was told it is too complicated but I can’t see why.

Anyone done this?

Certainly easy to replace with the bmw OEM headunit. You would just need to disconnect the screen and dvd drive, then swap the head unit over.

TBH if you stripped the loom, drive and screen out you’d find somebody to take the lot and make some cash.

Your only issue is what to do with the hole left by the screen. Although if you left the screen there you’d still sell the rest easily.

I've seen a couple of folk with oddments trays in place on the screen. I'll see if I can find again

i would turn that area into a shelf and it would be much more useful! lol

know anyone near berkshire that can do it by any chance?

I think the complication normally comes when people just want to add aftermarket amps to the carver / dsp system as it uses optical digital for the signal rather than rca line level. If you are ripping the head unit and loom out as well then you will have no such problem. Seems a little extreme though, have you thought how it could affect resale of your car? Most buyers will shy away from aftermarket headunits and swapping the nav for a cubby won’t be seen as desirable by 99% of people.

Optical only on earlier models, this changed sometime prior to facelift though.

The cubby h9le if for the X3, which will fit, but look a bit strange as the shape is different for the Z4 dash.

Hmm yeh I see where you coming from. Maybe just replacing it with the standard head unit is best. I’m doing it because I have no use for the navi function and the screen is totally redundant for me. I would rather have a shelf there.

Thanks mate!

Is it easy enough to fit the standard radio? And then what about the amp? Is that going to be complicated to replace with the carver dsp amp? Any issues with steering controls at all.

If anyone know someone who can get this done around Berkshire, let me know pls. Cheers

I'd pick up a Z4 business unit from eBay for a few quid and try. As I said above just disconnect the screen and DVD drive and then try it.

Ok. What about the amp?

I kind of want to know if it’s going to work before I try it because I know it will take me while to do it.

ok so i think im just going to get rid of the screen, the headunit and the navi dvd player. the rest will stay. i will swap the headunit out with the standard one and make a shelf where the monitor was. the shelf will be more useful than the navi lol

Don’t be tempted to try an x3 cubby to replace the satnav screen. It is nearly the same size and shape, but not close enough for anyone on here to be happy with.
And I doubt you would be able to finesse it in any way to make it look like it should be there - don’t waste your time with that option.
