Replacement Springs

Got in my car this morning to go to work and noticed a metallic jingling noise from the rear offside while hitting bumps (there are plenty), wasn't there yesterday so was strange. Anyway, I found out what it was on the way home as I heard whatever it was hit the road and disappear. Went and retrieved the broken piece of spring out of the road :x

Question is mainly where can I get an identical specification replacement ASAP? I've found one listed on Eurocarparts but it's not clear if it's a BMW OE one or aftermarket, i'd rather aftermarket for obvious reasons but just need it sorted quickly, its £67. It's saying you should replace both at the same time too. I don't want to lower the car at all. The other question is to what extent can I still drive the car with a broken spring? How easy are they to replace yourself, is there a guide anywhere? Sorry I don't have time to scour the entire broken spring thread, only online briefly.

Cheers all.

Here's how to do it....

Easy to do. Would only replace like with like or as a pair. Took mine to BMW and out of warranty but replaced by BMW 'goodwill' FOC.

Well I thought i'd check my VIN with BMW and it appears I have M-Sport suspension, now in most circumstances that's good news but it means I can't get aftermarket springs so it's either BMW ones at £99 each or a full set of Eibachs and 3cm lower which I don't want. Having had a good look at the springs it seems the other one has already broken long ago too, the broken face is totally corroded, strange that the last MOT or BMW service didn't pick it up. Not sure what to expect off BMW, either a discount on new springs or some kind of guarantee given the extortionate price of something that appears to only last 15-20k miles a time.

As you have the M-Sport suspension it is only a 10mm drop on the Eibachs, its 30mm from the non M-sport! Thats what im changing to asap following one of my springs snapping!

Ah, unfortunately I really need to sort it by Friday so I've gone and ordered 2 replacements from BMW, got a stingy discount, £169 for the pair. 2 year gaurantee on them, doubt i'll still have the car in 2 years so at least I shouldn't have to fork out again. It is annoying that I had a full alignment only a matter of weeks ago though with 1 broken spring (which they didn't spot), so with 2 new ones it's going to need redoing :x
