Replace stereo head unit

Just a word of advice: even if it's the same BMW speaker, the mounting position and angle will be different, so the model number is important, whether it's a genuine part or an OEM. For example, there are different grades even for standard, Hi-Fi, TOPHi-Fi, etc.
If it's the footwell woofer for the E89 then they'll all fit the same! The only issue will be for a non-BMW speaker being modded to fit in that location, in which case you'd always have to check for depth, width and height anyway. You'd also have to check your rating etc for compatibility as a woofer. Also bear in mind that on the standard system (no external amplifier) the footwell woofers are fed via the front door speaker channel in parallel, per side. On the amplified 676 they have a separate single channel for both, again in parallel. And the 677 system has a separate feed per footwell woofer. So all important to whatever you're thinking of putting in there.

I got my 4" Focal BMW speakers today. Unfortunately, they don't fit in the over-shoulder position. The actual speakers are 4", but the surrounds are a fair bit bigger than the standard ones.

Have to look for something else. Any ideas? these were recommended previously https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08CND9..._r_mwn_dp_Y75632YV6698QDFYZMC4&language=en_US, anyone know if these would fit straight in or would I have the same problems? Not even sure where I'd put the tweeters?
Google the manufacturer and you should be able to find the sizing specifications for them, then just compare.
As for the tweeters in the rear, I just drilled out the hole, leaving a small amount to hold them in place

So, I have to ask again as I don't think I got an answer before. Is there a reason why nobody replaces the BMW head unit? Seems like the weakest link to me......
It depends what you have already. When I first got mine I was shocked at the poor quality of the stereo (base model with only CD, Radio and AUX) which had a really bad sound quality.
So I stumbled upon a video showing how to retrofit an OE headunit that had Bluetooth (calls) and USB control built-in. So I did this mod and found another, far more important, improvement... the internal amplifier was far superior! So I now had much better sound
This, to me, is a first stage upgrade, at least at the time anyway. Of course, if you want more modern tech then you're going to have to fit something like the Android Touchscreen or an iDrive retrofit with an mmi box.
You can replace the headunit with a non-BMW unit, and even have adaptors for the steering wheel buttons and PDC sounds so they are fully functional. Personally I don't like that look though, but that's because I prefer it to look as OE as can be, that's just me though.

I have the standard 6-speaker system. It's awful! I just solved my Bluetooth problem at the weekend by adding a Ugreen aux Bluetooth receiver. It's brilliant, it handles calls and I can send audio to the stereo now. A bargain for £14.

So, I have a dilemma regarding the 4" over-shoulder speakers.... Are we sure any of the ones listed by B21 will fit 'Audison / Eton / Audiotec Fischer'? I searched for one that fitted the Z4 and they appeared to be deeper than the Focals that I've just had to box up! Anyone replaced the over shoulder 4" with anything they recommend and can share the model number?

I've gone for these and these https://www.focal.com/products/ec-165-ke after reading other threads and seeing what speakers people are using, I think they should fit with some custom speaker rings. I have the standard system and was planning on powering them off of a 4 channel vibe inline amplifier. Will this still work now regarding your comment on them being fed from the door speakers?

I’ve fitted all of the ones I’ve listed in all locations with no issues bar the bigger magnets specifically on the doors..

Cheers, to keep things on budget, I've gone for some similar Focals, but the ICBMW100 (non L version). Fingers crossed.

Fair enough. How would I know if mines coded to hi-fi?
Your head unit will be coded for the basic 6 speaker system from the factory, you would have to code it to the lower Hi-Fi one if you’re are going to upgrade the speakers, fit tweeters and possibly fit an aftermarket amp.

Bit of an update, the Focal ICBMW100 fitted without issue, which was nice.

I had the Vibe 4-way amp fitted today, but the ICBMW100 is far from impressive. It feels like they are only getting the high range and no bass.

I know you mentioned it before, but is this because I need to code the stereo now? If so, any threads on how to do this?

Hi Dave,

As mentioned above, I had the amp fitted today as well as the footwell 6.5" Focals in the footwell. I see you mentioned above that the door speakers feed the footwell. So, it sounds to me now that both the door and footwell speakers are being amplified, which would tie in with what you mentioned..... Not great as we all know the BMW speakers are crap and now these are stopping me from cranking the main speakers as the doors speakers clip.

What's the best way to resolve this? Shall I just remove the door speakers?

You need to use NcsExpert to change the coding.
Here’s a guide I found on using it.

And another YouTube one.

And finally a post about upgrading to the 676 hifi which will help with the coding.

Yes sorry it didn’t paste in

https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=142056

It’s a more in-depth upgrade than you have done but worth a read, page 3 covers the coding along with some links from AnubisZed.

Also, anyone have an idea on my door speakers question? Can I just disconnect/bypass them and just feed the footwell speakers?

Thanks, will take a look. How difficult is it to do? Any chance of screwing anything up?

At first it seems a little overwhelming but if you read through the instructions a few times and watch some videos then it’s relatively straightforward, ideally you need to save some backups of your ECU settings so that you can easily restore it should anything go wrong and then just simply follow all the steps in the correct sequence.

If the door speakers are clipping then it sounds like you have the gain set too high on the amp, try reducing it and see if the sound quality improves. Although as the base sound system is set for a higher frequency because of the lack of tweeters once it’s set to the $676 you may find the clipping is reduced, also there’s more volume sent to the rear midrange which again may help with the overall sound balance.

Brilliant thanks, I'm just worried about breaking something that I can't easily fix (I have a busy work and home life, so could do without the stress). I've just discovered a very well-reviewed BMW coder in Southampton, so I may give him a call as he's only a few miles away.

Yes, the door speakers are struggling as they are the standard BMW ones. If the new focal 6.5" footwell ones are powered off the door speakers, presumably I've just amped both the door and the 6.5", so they will soon die as I like loud music.....

First things first though, I'll get the stereo coded one way or another.

And just to doubly confirm....(and I will watch the videos when I get a chance) I'm going from the basic 6 speaker system coding to the $676 which is also called hifi?

Yes you just need to add $676

If you have only replaced the footwell speakers then you really should replace the door and rear mids as the factory one are crap.
I found when I did mine, doors, tweeters and rear mids that before coding to $676 that the tweeters were too “bright” and coding to $676 reduced that, but also reduced the base, so I ended up fitting some factory subs in the rear bulkhead which has made a huge improvement, I’ve still got a bit of tweaking to do as I’ve got some high pitch interference at about 1k revs, but that’s on hold for the moment until the weather gets a little warmer.

I've replaced and amped the footwell and rear 4" speakers (both are coaxial 2-way, so have tweeters). My concern is that if the footwell speakers run off the 4" door speakers, I've effectively amped the crappy BMW 4" doors speakers as well. These are now clipping badly if I crank the footwells. I'll take the door panel off when I get a chance as maybe I can just disconnect the door speakers and if the cable is linked to the footwell, these will continue to work.

Appreciate that replacing the doors is a good idea. I'll code the stereo though before anything else.
