Did a few jobs this afternoon on the E85 I bought yesterday. Firstly it had just had an oil service (oil + filter) so I changed the air filter and pollen filters. Easy enough job and only £22 for Bosch parts from Euro. They weren't too bad to be honest but I like to know they have been changed recently.
Next job was to look at the roof drains as I had read they block up and also I noticed after washing the car yesterday there was water dripping for hours from in front of the nearside rear wheel.
I noticed a motor in the boot behind a square piece of carpet that does not match the boot carpet so I guess that means someone has relocated the roof motor already.
I jacked the car up a few inches for better access using a trolley jack and wooden block under the rear jacking point. There is a panel in the rear wheel arch liner you can remove for better access, it is held on with a 10mm plastic nut and 2 x 8mm screws. There is also a further screw under the car however these were missing on mine (I have replaced them now).
The covers on the drain tubes were missing so someone has done this job already. I tried "rodding" the drains with electrical wire and also thinner push bike outer brake cable but found the cables would only go about half way up. I thought I had some success with this method as some gunk came out but then I poured water down the side of the half open roof and it was still just dripping water out the drain tube.
I don't have compressed air but I do have a foot pump! I was able to jam the inflator up into the drain tube and furiously pump it a few times after which I had a river of water pouring out. I repeated the process a few times to be sure.
I will try some water down the sides of the half open roof now and then and monitor the flow of water.
Meanwhile I have ordered a cruise control stalk from BMW in Derby for £100 part number 6131 6940 989 and while I was there I enquired about some floor mats I spotted on RealOEM. Part number 51477030766 (Anthracite) and part number 51477918321 (Anthracite with compass rose). The plain mats were £62 + VAT so I've ordered those. The others were £80-something plus VAT.
Lastly I have a new fault to investigate. The driver's side window has stopped going all the way up and I can hear some odd metal noises. It had a new motor 12 months ago and has been hardly used since so I don't know what's up, I will get the door card off tomorrow and investigate.
