Repairs / upgrades to Maldives Blue E85 2.2

Did a few jobs this afternoon on the E85 I bought yesterday. Firstly it had just had an oil service (oil + filter) so I changed the air filter and pollen filters. Easy enough job and only £22 for Bosch parts from Euro. They weren't too bad to be honest but I like to know they have been changed recently.

Next job was to look at the roof drains as I had read they block up and also I noticed after washing the car yesterday there was water dripping for hours from in front of the nearside rear wheel.

I noticed a motor in the boot behind a square piece of carpet that does not match the boot carpet so I guess that means someone has relocated the roof motor already.

I jacked the car up a few inches for better access using a trolley jack and wooden block under the rear jacking point. There is a panel in the rear wheel arch liner you can remove for better access, it is held on with a 10mm plastic nut and 2 x 8mm screws. There is also a further screw under the car however these were missing on mine (I have replaced them now).

The covers on the drain tubes were missing so someone has done this job already. I tried "rodding" the drains with electrical wire and also thinner push bike outer brake cable but found the cables would only go about half way up. I thought I had some success with this method as some gunk came out but then I poured water down the side of the half open roof and it was still just dripping water out the drain tube.

I don't have compressed air but I do have a foot pump! I was able to jam the inflator up into the drain tube and furiously pump it a few times after which I had a river of water pouring out. I repeated the process a few times to be sure.

I will try some water down the sides of the half open roof now and then and monitor the flow of water.

Meanwhile I have ordered a cruise control stalk from BMW in Derby for £100 part number 6131 6940 989 and while I was there I enquired about some floor mats I spotted on RealOEM. Part number 51477030766 (Anthracite) and part number 51477918321 (Anthracite with compass rose). The plain mats were £62 + VAT so I've ordered those. The others were £80-something plus VAT.

Lastly I have a new fault to investigate. The driver's side window has stopped going all the way up and I can hear some odd metal noises. It had a new motor 12 months ago and has been hardly used since so I don't know what's up, I will get the door card off tomorrow and investigate.

You must be pleased to find that your roof motor has already been relocated.

Good luck sorting that window.

Congratulations on the choice of colour, one of the best out there.....not that I'm biased in any way shape or form ;)
Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing the rest of it

Morning

Welcome and I agree with the sentiment on your choice of colour!

If you need any parts I have a breaker car in Maldives blue

I’m over in Lincoln so not a million miles away

Cheers

Stuart

Thanks for the comments. I've been very busy today - collected some 19 inch alloys from Jamie_z4 first thing this morning but I've only had time to fit two of them. It's not the best pic as the car had just been jacked up, hopefully the gap above the wheels will reduce when the car settles. I'm also going to get some new BMW wheel centres.

My screwdriver from eBay turned up so now my OCD can sleep easy knowing the toolkit is complete!

Thanks to Stuart (bigwinn) for sorting me out with a used window regulator. I will be fitting it tomorrow all being well. I also collected my cruise control stalk and mats from BMW Derby but not had time to do anything with them as I've been driving for about 8 hours collecting parts today.

If you haven't seen my post in the newbies section, I bought this car a few days ago with just 17k miles from new. Apart from fixing the failed window regulator I'm intending to do a few retrofits and enjoy the social side of taking this modern day classic to a few local car meetings/shows.

Good looking motor. I hope to have mine looking like that one day, but it needs rather a lot of work . . . and has few more miles too.

I've got a couple of better photos of the car now that my daughter and camera are back from a week away.

I fitted the new window regulator today. I've repaired one on a Beetle convertible before by buying the cable repair kit from eBay but if I remember correctly the cable was slightly the wrong length (or maybe it was the outer casing) so I had to modify it. I said "never again" so this time I changed the whole regulator after a 3 hour round trip to collect one from Stuart (bigwinn) yesterday.

The door membrane is shot having been removed previously by someone and taped up so I will get a new one and do it properly. Looking at RealOEM I think the part number is 36136783536. It does have this number on it but maybe that has been superseded: 51487018858

I fitted the other two alloys and tried some genuine 68mm wheel centres but they are too big. The ones that came with the wheels (not BMW ones) clip in easily but the BMW ones almost go in but are just too big. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers!
