Remus vs Original Exhaust

Hello,

To much of your disapproval (I imagine!) I'm rather ant-modifications and may be about to purchase a Z4M with a Remus exhaust. Youtube videos can be a little misleading so I wanted to really ask how different a sound it makes to stock - volume, pops, pitch etc, and also how much larger the pipes are than stock (diameter).

Thanks!

The Remus ones are supposed to be the quietest and most palatable of the aftermarket exhausts.

In the end i decided to subtly modify the internals of the stock back boxes (i like my cars to look totally original), they sound a little louder with more pops and burbles, but without the aftermarket/modded look

Does the remus remove any of the rasp? I'm much more fond of the high pitched rasp against deeper exhaust tones/burbles.

Even the stock exhausts have no rasp. Remus is almost stock sounding with a bit of a deeper tone. A friend couldn't even tell that I put on new exhausts when he first heard it fired up. The Remus tips are a bit larger than stock, which fills up the opening much better (rolled tips are much better looking than stock). If you don't like how they sound, I'm very sure you can find someone to swap it back to stock with you. The biggest benefit of the Remus is getting rid of those "nutsacks" looking stock exhaust, yet still sounding somewhat stock.

Exhausts are mostly for changing sound. Any performance added/subtracted from it is negligible. From a sound standpoint, I would say Remus = OE + 10% or 15% in loudness. The weird thing is that it only gets louder after the exhausts are nice and hot. At startup, it's almost indistinguishable from stock.

I doubt you will want to switch back once you see & hear them. They sound great while being subtle and looking better than stock. It makes the car.

I have Remus back boxes and generally agree with XMetal. They are not offensively loud - mine still passes noise tests at trackdays with around 90db when hot. The sound is like stock with extra bass at low revs, and rasp that builds from 4,000 rpm to a screaming crescendo by 8,000. There is no drone so it is not tiring to drive hundreds of miles on a road trip. The cracks and pops are more prominent than stock too. As said, best of all, you lose the stock back box "bollocks" hanging below the tail pipes :D

So how much are the Remus exhausts in the UK - about £800 ? - and how much to get them fitted ? If I ever get an M then I will need to know these things 8)

The Remus sounds great - i cant wait for a big forum meet where i can sample peoples various mods and exhaust changes - i don't think any videos do sound justice, i'm always warmly surprised with how my M sounds, and its about 5x better than any video i've seen..

Get the ///M first, then worry about mods later :poke:

If I am going to make sure I have the budget to do what I want, I need to know in advance of buying the car :poke: :P

Mine cost half that for a barely used pair I found - they come up from time to time here and on Pistonheads. Fitting is easy if you have access to a lift, and cheap if you don't (unless you're mmmfive and your exhaust is corroded :P ). You need to think about the increase in your insurance premium too...

Agreed on simple fitting, but you don't need a lift. I used these ramps, which provided plenty of access.

If there's a will, there's a way :P
