Removing the rear wing

Since buying the car theres been a small ding in the rear N/S wheel arch but also another very slight outward dimple too on the same panel. The wheelarch ding has some evidence of rust inside the lip, where the paint has cracked.

Ive had a quote to repair and respray it, but I'm tempted to replace the whole panel, which I can get for just over the £100 mark, and in the correct colour.

For the labour involved in repairing it and removing the damage, filling and sanding, I'd rather have a new wing that I know has no rust or filler if its just a matter of bolting it on. (Even if I find I still need a respray to match it)

So, My question is, How easy is it to remove the rear N/S wing ?

Thanks...

The roof need to be removed to some degree or other. Might be worth contacting stevie.w as he removed the panels on hit car for painting so has done this.

I'm with you on replacing the panel. Exactly what I did on my front wing. Cost me £160 in total which what painting alone would have cost at least.

Hi, srhutch is right, the roof does need moving slightly (I followed shipkillers instructions on roof removal). The whole roof doesn't need removing, just the 7 bolts that hold the alloy frame to the back of the car. With these removed, the frame can move slightly forward and allow access to the one bolt that's tucked away under the rear panel. This is the only PITA bolt, the others are straight forward once the bumpers and skirts are off.

Thanks Chaps.
I'm tempted to give this a go, but perhaps its a job to be done around October/Nov before Winter, when I can do a bit each night and take my time, rather than take the car out of action for a few weeks this summer, when I want to drive it.

Anymore info still appreciated though.

... and get the wheels refurbed ...
They were all done by Platinum in March you cheeky fecker !
PVR = Poor Visual Recognition ... :D
To be fair, I can see what PVR means - it's probably just the way the light's falling, but they look as though there's kerbing around the rim

This is getting worrying, that's twice in one lifetime that I've agreed with PVR....

Number 5 is just running outside to check out his wheel now ...

My wheels are all spotless... Maybe dirty, but certainly no kerbing or chips.

(And there are four)

Now... Back on to wing removal...

I'm still toying with the wing replacement idea, rather than the repair & respray option.

Can anyone confirm if the wing is welded on anywhere, or if it is definitely just a bolt on part ?

No, its not welded anywhere. It is just bolt on. But as mentioned before, 1 of them is a PITA but not impossible.

OK, thanks John.

I'll keep my eye out for a Titan Silver wing then as the original one I was watching has now gone it seems.

Alan - who was saying last week that there was a weld just at the point where the roof meets the wing?

Not disagreeing with previous poster (I don't know myself) but we did have this discussion ?????

Anyone changed one themselves = personal experience?

The guy at Forza was telling me it was welded, but seeing the thread where SRHutch swapped his front wing himself makes me wonder if it was correct.
As you say, I was hoping somebody had personally done it and could definitely vouch either way ?

Hi, Just to confirm, there are no welds holding the wing on, its just purely bolted. All the main bolts are visible once the bumper and skirt and plastic trim on rear quarter at the inside of the door have been removed. The one that's a pain, is hidden under the rear panel between the boot and the roof (have highlighted the bolt hole in pic).16%20-%20Copy.jpg
This bolt is accessed from inside the boot. I followed 'Shipkillers' guide to roof removal to access this bolt. You don't need to remove the roof, but just undo the 7 bolts holding the aluminium frame around the bulkhead, which gives you just enough room to move the frame out the way to access the bolt.
If you've only removed all the visible bolts, then yeah you'd swear its welded or somehow fixed under the panel.
I stripped both my wings off when I painted the car. Its not too bad, just extreme fun upside down, contorting yourself in the boot of the car! Especially if you're not a small person. Bring back child labour!
Cheers, John.

Looking at the damage, that looks like an easy repair, have you tried any of the guys who do dent removal and then small local repairs to the paint, just a thought.
