Removing the OE phone mount

Update...
I've just added a new link to a much cheaper brand new wireless charging unit to my post a few posts above this one

Tray & mat part numbers....
Blank full width tray - 51 16 9 181 218 (short number 9181218) - Full width rubber mat - 51 16 9 174 845 (short number 9174845)
Blank half tray with phone* - 51 16 9 181 229 (short number 9181229) - Rubber mat - 51 16 9 174 846 (short number 9174846)

Cup holder with phone or blank (RHD) - 51 16 9 181 223 (short number 9181223) - Rubber mats (cups) - 51 16 9 150 218 (Short 9150218) & 51 16 9 198 594 (short 9198594)
Cup holder with phone or blank (LHD) - 51 16 9 181 226 (short number 9181226) - Rubber mats (cups) - 51 16 9 150 218 (Short 9150218) & 51 16 9 198 594 (short 9198594)

*If you decide to remove the phone base (either phone/blank or phone/cup holders) but don't want to replace the tray then you can remove it and place this rubber mat in it's place 51 16 9 150 224 (short 9150224).

Hope that all helps

Many thanks for the info and numbers, guys.
I’ve found this site to be rather useful (https://www.lllparts.co.uk/en/product/oddments-tray/mpn/51169181218 ) so may contact them to verify the RHD/LHD config (out of interest Dave, how did you know which was which?) and price up the set with rubber mats too, though might get pricey!

LLLParts is a good site, I've used them a number of times  The chances are you'll get a better price than some sellers of used items on eBay  Don't forget though that shipping is on top and it'll take between one and three weeks to get them. Oh and you need the long number for their website, then short number won't work.

As for LHD / RHD, I used two web tabs open for RealOEM one set up for LHD and one for RHD and compared them. I'd took guess that there would be a difference and I was right.

Ah nice one. Thank god for devoted people such as yourself to save the rest of us the pain!

Probably a stupid question, but here goes...

I don't have phone mount, telephone preparation or bluetooth, just the standard full width oddments tray. I'd been toying with getting a wireless charging base and plug it into the USB socket. I was just worried about the phone rattling around and off the wireless charging base.

I don't suppose it would be feasible to fit the tray for the OE phone mount with BMW wireless charger? I don't expect to have all the wiring to give the antenna boost, but is there the power connection for the phone mount, albeit not doing very much :?

Cheers!
Andy

Hi Andy,

I am in the process of doing the conversion from blank tray to full OE phone holder with full connectivity.
When I'm back at my PC I'll post the wiring diagram for the power supply along with the correct socket etc and part numbers etc.
I will be making this into a full video on my YouTube channel, but alas all my videos are delayed at the moment due to available time doing jobs

Thanks Dave,

Looking forward to another one of your brilliant tutorials

Hopefully what I asked made sense - basically I'm wondering if the standard wiring loom on a 2009 35i has the power connection plug for the OE phone installation.

I'm not sure I'm up for a full phone and Bluetooth retrofit, just something that will allow me to keep the phone charged and safely stowed while driving :driving:

Cheers!
Andy

To the best of my knowledge it won't have the plug already there.

On the point of an aftermarket wireless charger, the flat pad type I've seen are a rubber type material so if you were to place that in the center console on top of the existing rubber mat then I doubt it would move about very much, if at all.

I'm somewhat confused about your *footnote and the differences between these two rubber mats - on RealOEM it lists as one for vehicles with Storage compartment package S493A, and the other for vehicles without it - and with a slight difference in dimensions:
  • 51169174846 213,5 x 73,1 mm
  • 51169150224 219,7 x 69,3 mm

Which one should be used in which scenario?

Most posts only mention the 51169150224 part - both on this forum and on others. But if I could use 51169174846, I'd be pleased, as that's cheaper than 51169150224 - no way I'm paying 70$ for a piece of rubber!

In my case I have the two cup holders and legacy phone cradle. I'd like to keep the tray, retaining the cup holders and just pry out the phone mount and place the rubber mat in its place.

EDIT: Giving some thought above the previous post, could the answer be that 51169150224 is meant to go instead of the removed phone mount (and is tapered towards the front), whereas 51169174846 is the one one marked with the X above? I.e.it's the mat for those that have a half storage compartment instead of cup holders - and is rectangular in shape?

For another (possibly even cheaper) rubber mat option: could 51167118064 (designed for an E90) be used? (Those appear in much greater supply and at more reasonable prices, even on AliExpress.) I couldn't find its dimensions on RealOEM but visually, the difference is in that it has a higher "lip" on the edges as opposed to the more flat design of the E89 mat. Here's a video of someone removing the phone mount and replacing it with that mat on an E90: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEqWoIeQzKk If the phone mount is the same dimensions on the E89 as it is on E90, then perhaps this mat would also fit?

51169174846 is the piece of rubber to cover where the clip in phone was..

I've just removed the whole phone/cupholder and will replace it with the storage compartment and rubber

51169181229 and 51169174845

FWIW to get the existing phone holder out you need to take the whole central tunnel trim off..the release tangs can only be accessed from underneath..

All clear now, thanks! This just shows how inaccurate and misleading the RealOEM diagram is, showing that both of these mats are item #10. (Even though the description does point in the right direction - apparently Storage compartment package S493A = cup holders)

I'll see if anyone can opine on the 51167118064 E90 mat but I might as well just order it and report back.

If you're not worried about grip, you could also line it with eg a piece of felt cut to shape. Or you might get some rubber mat and trim that to size. It's very hidden in the armrest, so I don't think it would show.

I will probably replace my own phone holder when I replace the console, but I won't discard it because restorers will soon be
reinstalling these to create a correct period 2010s car (compete with vintage iPhone) :)

My first mod was a "iphone/cupholder-delete" last fall..

"Genuine BMW Oddments Tray + Insert mat Z4 Roadster E89 51169174845 51169181218" for $41 USD new on ebay.
Money well spent. The cupholders were useless and my phone couldn't sit flat.

Did you have to remove the entire middle section to get the phone holder out?

I have the stupid cup holder and phone socket - I would like to swap for what you have.

Cheers

Yes it’s fixed from underneath sadly…
