Remote Roof Module Review - gapTech

Today, I did the QA of the installation and documentation for gapTech for the new Remote Roof Module. It is working great

I received the module in the post today and went to install it. Like the One Touch Module, the installation is all from the inside of the car behind the switch control box. As the OTH module, the box is tiny and you could easily lose about 10 of these in the space behind the control unit. One of the wires to attach to (white / yellow / red) is very thin, and when using the scotch lock, it just cut the wire in two. That took the decision out of my hands and I got the soldering iron out.

I rejoined the thin wire and decided to solder them all instead, which is actually a nicer solution then the locks as it showed to me that the wire could have easily snapped when putting it all back together and pushing everything around a bit so it did me a favour really.

When soldering, make sure you don't earth the solder iron or use a gas solder instead. This time, I tested the roof first before I fitted the panel back in.

The opening procedure is very simple, three clicks to do it. I found it easiest to get the timing right by doing a one-two count between each click, that worked each time (my car is on a CTEK charger so no issues with the battery running down :D ). The closing clicks are easy as well with the two open clicks + the lock click.

I tested the one touch as well again, just to make sure it was not interfering, and all was well there as well.

The installation is far superior to the Reinhold modules from an ease point of view, as everything can be done from the single easily accessible location in the car.

I can highly recommend the product and at the offered price, it is very good value for money especially comparing it to the competition.

Yes - the black wire connects to the black wire of the OTH (which in turn connects to the brown wire of the small plug).

You mentioned about the soldering iron being earthed.

Mine is a plug and play electrical one so surely it's earthed as standard back to the plug. Is this a problem.

Presume you stripped back the two wires, soldered together then just taped up to save using connector blocks or scotch locks?

Good work.. def selling my Reinhold now.. and ordering one of these.

does it do anything extra? Or just that its easier to install?

Be easier to install.... I currently have my cigarrette console thing out of my car aswell (but not related to this... was wiring up a few more bits to my stealth power last weekend and never finished  )

Thanks for the info PVR.

Can you confirm that the remote close, also closes the windows ?

Also have you been told when the new remote module will be available, and at what cost ?

Do you know if gapTech plan to bring out a combined OTH and Remote module ?

( Sorry for lots of questions :D )

I heated the soldering iron whilst connected to power, then I disconnected the power lead, then I did the soldering. I did the same for the three wires, it stays hot enough for the duration it takes to solder one wire.

 Thanks Dav

I ignored that post, because I thought it was the group buy for just the OTH ( at £40 ish ) , which i wasn't really interested in, remote roof up is a completely different prospect ;-)....

Now ordered and Paid so double  for the tip Dav

What's that then?
Am I missing out on something.

I assume he just means things like phone chargers, sat nav etc hard wired in and hidden rather than hanging out the cig lighter! That's what I've got.

I have another cigarette adapter and a 24v plug, whch i wired to my fusebox... as the cigarette socket in permantently on in my car! So these are only powered when my car ignition is on.

The inverter for my 24v plug is stuck behind my dash behind the glovebox... however the extension lead came loose so i had to remove the center console to tape it up to stop it coming loose.... but it got dark and i gave up.. on Sunday... so my car will remain in pieces for a few weeks now

Sorry, if i am way off topic here... but does this allow you to control the open and closing off the roof from your key fob (or is it a separate fob) for pre-face lift models (2003)
