Depends what you want from the map I guess. A competent mapper will be able to do things like remove the soft rec limiter, leaving the engine free to make power up to 7k. Things like the throttle hysteresis can be adjusted, or the way the car switches between clutch disengaged map and clutch engaged map to reduce that initial lag when you change gear.

All depends on what exactly you want from the car I guess!

In addition, launch control could be set too (i.e. a rev limiter at 0mph).

Given engines will 'lose power' as it ages etc, you'll maybe help restore lost power.

Probably be better to give it an Italian tune up and a service instead, BMW already do a pretty good job of getting a lot from the engine.
 
The fly by wire throttle remembers usuall usage, however a reset starts it afresh again anyway.

It's effectively the intentionally built-in lag between you making a throttle position adjustment and the ecu adjusting the necessaries to produce the requested torque. Think of it this way; if you go along a bumpy Road, bmw dont want you kangarooing on the throttle so they build in a little lag to allow your foot to move a bit and it won't instantly register. This lag also protects the drive train from sudden changes in inertia by wildly different torque requests from the throttle.

Loads of cool stuff to play with either way, I've got a friend who's been going through all the maps (there are so many it's ridiculous!) for the n52b30 engine to see what can be done :)

Certainly remaps give the biggest gains for turbo and turbo diesel cars in my experience, turbo diesel's particularly benefit from power increases and smoothed out power delivery. I used 'Bluefin' on a previous motor: a Mondeo ST 2.2 turbo diesel and it transformed the driving experience.

That's not throttle hysterisis though, hysterisis means memory which is the answer I gave-you are talking about throttle mapping which is a different thing, it's also altered by pressing the sport button which sharpens the throttle mapping up.
Throttle hysterisis is where the cars adaptive ecu learns your driving behaviour, which can be reset.

I always thought the 3.0si just needed that little bit more power.

Would be nice to squeeze another 15bhp out of it
 
Getting the ECU updated and intake manifold from a 200 kW version should get you 6 hp... doubt it's worth the hassle though.

You're both right and wrong in the above.

Yes hysteresis is the time dependent output based on past inputs, but if a time lag is required between input and output to smooth out the torque request this is called rate-dependent hysteresis, and is not based necessarily on past events. You are right in that the throttle memory can be reset, but rate dependent hysteresis will still remain unchanged.

For the record, Hysteresis is altered slightly in sport mode, but the most noticeable difference is the throttle position map, and what torque a given throttle position requests.


Anyway, in short a lot can be done to improve what aspects of the car you wish, it's just a case of finding a competent mapper who has a good understanding of the ecu and how each map relates to another within the ecu.
