Redundancy, todays the day

I would have posted exactly the advise noted above by.

Right or wrong the temptation is really to recruit people in work and once out, weeks enjoying a 'rest' become months and then questions at interview as to why?

You don't say how old you are, or how long you've been paying into your pension fund.

I was made redundant 10 years ago at the age of 53; I had 37 years of service with the same company, and a final salary pension scheme.

I hope things work out for you.

I don't know what most of you do for a living but we are about to experience a major boom in the North of Alberta. Tar Sands expansion that has been on hold is now starting up again. some of the companies recruit overseas and the pay is ridiculous (high) because Fort Macmurray is not the nicest place in the world to be. Go there, work, go home to the UK after a couple of years with a fat bank account.

Our fab shops in the province are starting to go crazy with work, 60 hours a week and options for the sunday as well. Any of the skilled trades will be in high demand so give it a thought. WE lost 6 of our Operators in the last 4 months to Northern jobs, I guess we couldn't compete with the extra $50k to $75k a year they would make....the market for white collar workers is slow but will pick up later. It has to, to keep up with accounting for all the work etc....

Good Luck pal.

Oh yeah, all that rubbish on the TV about the tar sands being dirty, it's true ...but it's no different than the North Sea, Texas Gulf or the Middle East...just colder.

Are there any women up there?

Plenty of women, different prices on each corner....

It's a town full of industrial construction workers, too much spare cash and not a great place to bring up kids if you get my drift. You'd want to keep a family down south in the civilized part of the country....where I live..

Apply, experience, evaluate. If you don't like it you can still look for something else. Applying for a job whilst being employed is always easier than when unemployed. It's nice to have options - use them

Sound advice

Only risk that if you did not like it, you would have lost the redundancy payout.

All depends on the size of the payout. A few thousand is not worth it, 20 - 30k upwards might be worth considering.

I love how the cats are more important than the Z4 - completely agree :D

I've been offline for almost 2 weeks, s**t to hear about this actually happening Steve, however it works out will always be for the best regardless of how it seems at the time. Now, if you do end up going, what about friends and family discount before you do?

No job's safe at the moment IMO - even me who works for a local authority in a section that's income-generating, I ain't safe. They're currently looking at offloading our service to a charitable trust and if it happens (which it probably will) there's no guarantees we'll all keep our jobs...
