Redundancy - Stories

Very tough but good to see your glass is half full, not half empty Adam.

My firm (similarly in Finance) has been & still is going through very difficult times, though if it happens will like you focus on what am going to do about it rather than whinge.

Hopefully in a years time you will look back & be able to think was the best thing that ever happened...

I'm with everyone else Adam, sorry to hear your news but sometimes things happen for a reason, I was made redundant at 21, was out of work for a few months then took a job in a paint factory warehouse loading the wagons for 6 months, turned out to be 12 years!

Went from the warehouse into the laboratory, onto technical service, business development then my present company came in for me to do sales, never looked back, hope you don't either :thumbsup:

I got made redundant 12 years ago now.........relatively early on in my career (I was 25 at the time and only part-qualified) but it was one of the best things that happened to me.

At my request I was put on gardening leave for 4 months (the whole summer) as this meant my pension counted (and it was non-contributory final salary so sort of worth having). I took 2 X 2 week holidays and had secured a new position with a 73% payrise within 2 weeks of being put on gardening leave........it was really the catalyst in my career so worked out great in the end :)

Happened to me too - spent one summer mountain biking and rock climbing with a mate who as in a similar position, then found a temp role for a few months on more money, then found current job (nearly 20 years in the same company now!)

Stressful at the time but worked out well in the end. Keep your chin up :)

I was pensioned off 13yrs ago after an accident on my motorcycle

I know it's not the same

But I was 40yrs old and thought I was finished :cry:

After a year recovering

A new job beckoned, and I've never looked back

If you want to work, you will find a postition out there

Maybe like me, time to go in a new direction

A new challange, whatever happens

Made redundant in November after 20 years. Got an amazing pay off, so bought a Z4 and paid off my MINI Cooper. Haven't bothered looking for a job as yet.

I've already contracted back to them for a week @ a ridiculous daily rate to do the job which I was made 'redundant' from. Will be contracting back to them for another 2 months from mid July at a healthy rate as well.

In the mean time I've been given an opportunity to join a mate and help build up his company. As soon as we make enough to pay me, I'll take a wage. It's much more interesting work that what I was doing too, and there is a chance I won't have to work for anyone ever again!

For now I'm kicking back and enjoying all the extra time with my kids and Zed. Best 40th birthday present ever.

p.s. I realise not everyone has had such a postive experience from redunancy, just want to show that sometimes that which seems bad, can work out really well!
 
I decided not to be relocated to Leeds, and was then made redundant in August 2002. I was doing some temp works between August 2002 and February 2003. I started working in my current company as a temp in February 2003 and then became permanent after 2 months.

I will face another challenge next year. Our company will form a JV with another company in the UK. The new JV will become the UK largest construction materials manufacturer. After the JV is formed, most people will have to go through job interview and selection to have a job in the new world. My future in 2013 will be uncertain :( .
 
Yeah, eyeing up a few positions at the mo. Going to see a few recruitment consultants on the 16th. Hope it goes well.

Fortunately, this doesn't put me in financial difficulty... well, not yet! :lol:

Sorry to hear this Adam. Keep your chin up and keep the faith. Something better or unexpected always comes along at times like these. Been made redundant twice in 12 years of working and each time it's led to an opportunity. Also all about networking too. Sounds w&nky but its so important. Contacts are worth their weight in 98 RON fuel so get that address book out and go cold calling those finance bods.

Always an opportunity. The only job I ever had was in 1990 and the London based company I worked for went bankrupt in the recession then, a month after I bought a house and got married. Great, no more income.

However, I used that chance to try to start for myself. Been very lucky in finding customers and people who were happy to work with me on my projects over the years - both payroll based and freelance. It is definitely a case of who you know though so if you have contacts, use them.
 
First interview done today - with current employer, for their "alternative role" in the restructure they've just had (althought they have badged the job as something different, it's actually my job :headbang: )

Next interview on Friday, and two more next week :thumbsup:

All looking positive :)
 
as others have said, in this situation, you often find a better opportunity.

regarding the restructure that's going on at your place, they did the same where i am 6 months ago and it's a joke. i've been here 7 years and it's a yearly thing.

a lady who'd been in a role for 4 years was given a 'project' and they recruited a temp to cover her, and then they made her role redundant, hence she went, and the temp is still here, doing her job. just had her contract extended for a year.

i didn't think much to the departed lady, but the way they went about it all left such a bitter taste in my mouth i went looking around and found something (hopefully) better, i'm currently 2 months into a 3 month notice period.... :| probably why my post count is quite high!!

i wasn't affected, others were, but i really don't understand why companies get decent people to re-apply for their jobs, i think management sometimes see it as a 'quick win', however, as i suggested at the time, you just lose loyalty from your decent staff, it is more laborious, but if you wish to slim down your workforce, you can usually manage the chaff out in the medium term.

it sounds like you're being very pro active about things, which means that you are sure to look back on this in the future as the opportunity it was.

head up it does happen for a reason .wife and my self neally ended up out the door when the new company took us over .i wanted to go .but was stopped from going and in the end after a 6 months of being up in the air she ended up with a job and a promotion and company car.so stay positive all the best :thumbsup:

Serious advice, if it is your job repackaged, see a solicitor with an employment practice. There are some shady practices about and lawyering up can get thing fixed remarkably quickly (or add a sizeable chunk to the compromise package)

As an example, my contract didn't allow my employer to pay in lieu of notice. This equaled breach of contract at which point that period's salary was reclassified compensation and as such tax free :thumbsup:

i was made redundant 3 years ago, contracted for two years and took some timeout... shall we say between contracts at the moment, however i am looking at all sorts rather than rushing back into what i did.. hopeful i will get something soon, but living in the countrys blackspot is a bit difficult but i am sure something will turn up. Dont be afraid to go contracting you can always sign under a umbrella company if you do not wish to handle the tax/expenses....
